ABF | Passenger Seat

Can it go all day on a charge? Does its tech platform order drinks and lunch for the, Lazy bastard?
Most people don’t know this, but that hat actually has a solar panel on top.
So, when he is wearing it outside, the sun will charge it.
However, when he sits his lazy butt down in the recliner, it is more of a “shut-down” mode than a “charge” mode!!!

So what do they do with the seats? Do they save them and then reinstall them when they sell the trucks?

Why don't they order them from the factory without the seat?
As was mentioned the tractors are are spec'd with one seat. The seats cost
$1200-$1400 so there is no point to pay for something that is not used. Also the seat frame/rails will wear on rough roads even without anybody sitting in it. The major shops keep some rebuilt seats in stock. It takes a while to rebuild a seat so the seats are changed out to reduce downtime. Those extra seats are installed for road tests & moving drivers back to their domicle for holidays, Christmas & Thanksgiving.

At our terminal and EOL we got a couple seats in the shop always, waiting to be installed for training a new hire, and we got one city unit with two seats and we use that for the road test.

They do keep some of the seats around to use for road testing new hires.
Here at the Rock, our shop will install the passenger seat in a truck for the safety man to do these road tests. So, I assume that they order the trucks without passenger seat with the exception of a few of them to have the seat in them for this purpose. Maybe DCM Doc will be along shortly to explain the passenger seat thing a little better. He is retired from the NLR shop !!!
The freighliners came with 2 seats, they used the passenger seat to replace the worn out seats in the macks. They aren’t an exact fit but they work….

Our terminal has 2 trucks with passenger seats for road testing new hires.
The rest came from the factory with out them like the radios to save cost.
When I worked for Yellow we got test trucks from all the truck manufacturers. We knew we were never getting any of them cause they all had 10 speeds instead of those 7 speeds. They all had radios when we left Kansas City. Sent us all to Chicago with them. Caught the same tractor on the way home and already had the radio stolen out of it. Couldn't have nice equipment at Yellow.
