New Penn | Pretty Dumb Options For Brand New LTL Trucks

Those were the days....hazy....hot....and humid.......no thanks.
I did it. Surprised myself....scared the hell out of myself and lots of people I bet....80,000 lb cement tanks....potholes that knocked the truck out of gear..when I was having a hard time learning how to even get it in gear.
at least your outside in the pic- sitting in the Lincoln Tunnel at 7am gridlock, windows open, bus fumes pouring in - spring seat, manual steering 69 U-model Mack for an hour ! All trying to get out onto 11th ave when it was still old NYC seedy as hell !!

I'd come out that way sometimes. Mostly used the Holland with cement and bridges when I did floor loads.
I don't even know if I'd want to take a car there now. It got to doing illegally long days until empty. And then construction or accidents in Jersey started tacking on another hour and a half coming home...they all started driving from their new homes here to work over there...
Became too much.
I stopped going in before 9/11. Don't have the patience for it now. I can say I did it. Many wouldn't. Couldn't do it now.

$100/HR. Time and a half OT. Full Teamster Healthcare. Full pension. No accident write ups......you got a deal to run NYC.
Otherwise you're gonna have to find another young dumb guy like I was.

Very early 1970's, feeder driver for UPS, numerous trips through Lincoln Tunnel and cross town on 34th/42nd Streets between Secaucus and Maspeth. Late nights and the sights to see there were worth it. :smile new:

At the time I liked it. It's what I did. I learned there with cement tanks from Nazareth Pa in. Didn't have to be accurate backing to unload. 20' hose. 40' trailer. It was nice in the middle of the night. Big city could be quiet also. I preferred it over getting sent to icy snowy big hills and mountains. Only 1 hill. Jugtown on 78. Most guys from PA didn't prefer doing the cities over your way...young guys had to do their learning time there.

Ah yes, Jugtown and the pickle parks back then west of the mountain on both sides down at the bottom.

I was hill happy in that part of the USA. Get me a good tractor and I'll go anywhere.

They also sent me into NYC, NJ etc when I was too naive to know any better. Enjoyed the food, hated the parasites and tolls and made maybe 10 cents. I remember one little resturant on US1 about 15 minutes above 278 I think it was had truck parking, but the eggs were 10 dollars each. We learned to eat hearty before going in at Phillpsburg be a day or two before we came out.

Ive absolutely no reason to go up there again in my lifetime. I already had my fill.

I did floor loads with rollers for 5 years..side doors...Manhattan....Queens.
I today I moan....back then I growled.
I'm very civil today.
I'd never do that again.
I'll just remember it.
But I did make a stink about 48' trailers so much even back then that they sent the Operating Manager of the DC with me.
They never gave me a 48 after that.
Only 45's.
I bet you never had to rope garments. That was a two man job .That most times one man would do.Heavy No ,tedious Yes.

I made $50/load to drop a cement tank and we did 2/day.
$100/day. No benefits. Another company we would unload them but it wasn't just NYC. Some but not all.

The NMFA is a good thing for a rate. But I do not think it is a fair rate to be living in NYC or North Jersey...as far as this area goes. I don't know how you can buy a house or pay rent over there on $24.51/hour. Are you eligible for government assistance at that rate? I wouldn't doubt it. And it shouldn't be that way at all.

I really do think closer to $100/hour would be closer to fair in them areas.

Large sections of Jersey were full of rich. Pick any road and follow it. Sooner or later you run into Estates. Not houses or subdivisions. Estates. Everyone else got harvested.

You guys can negotiate a higher rate next contract.Chicago has a higher rate.

Good luck with 100.00 per hour. You will only make that kind of money ,If your a pimp or a lawyer.

I live and work in Pa. We do western Jersey but that will be done after COO this year.
Our area...yes we'd like a little more. But I'm saying that over in Jersey and by NYC and in NYC.....i think it must be very tough to make it on our pay.

We'll never make it if we think that way though.
It's a matter of getting guys to stick together and saying that we have had enough and if you want freight....you will only get it for closer to our rate...not you making the rate.
And it seems sometimes lately that guys just might start sticking together better than they have since deregulation.
People have started learning the game.
And might see their value for a change.
Some FedEx and Conways were organizing.
