Chains mean it's time to go to the hotel. I let dispatch make the call one time on icy roads and going around a backup. I spent 3 hours waiting for a wrecker to pull me up the hill. He gave the Trooper who stopped preference. The only way he managed, even chained, was by going over the top and adding cable.
