Who knew? Now FedEx Freight has an Technician apprenticeship program... Very little detail, but it's out there.

This from the "Daily News":

"Earlier this year, FedEx Freight launched a Fleet Maintenance Apprentice Program aimed at addressing the need for qualified, knowledgeable technicians while also supporting our People First philosophy to invest in our people. The Fleet Maintenance Apprentice Program, an internal program to grow talent from within, engages team members and provides them with a structured program that aims to increase knowledge and skill levels to that of a technician..."

Personally, I'm holding out for an opening in the Pilot apprentice program, which is already in place. But for those sick of driving the truck, and the variable hours that go with it, this might be your ticket. :idunno:

When they announced this program at our barn one of our drivers checked into the details. He found out that the pay cut to go into the program would be too substantial to even consider signing up for. It might be enticing for part time dock workers though.

Do you know how much the techs make or what their progression looks like?

For a young guy staring out I think this would be a great deal.

At the local Volvo dealer by me, the labor rate charged is $146.00 an hour. Their, “techs”, mostly people under probably 30 years old get about $23. So I guess that’s part of the reason why a lot of these Volvo, check engine lights, come back on a few days after it sat there for 2.

We call it the company light

I get worried when there ISN’T a CEL on in a Volvo.

Top scale may be different regionally a bit. But im at 33/hr plus a 1.50 night diff. But also includes ASE master which adds 3.50/hr, currently if memory serves.
By the way Volvos set CE and other warning lights off more than any Mfg. Their systems are over-engineered, over sensitive. Last two days I only worked on Volvo's...LOL

I'm thinking about giving it a shot, but I'm undecided.

On one hand, I like to learn new stuff and skills I can take anywhere.

On the other, what if I suck and I get sent back to the bottom of the board

There all kinds of mech openings in the Great FXF. Some shops don't do the apprenteship program however

I would pass on that deal. Their pay is based on experience plus they don't get ot.

I am sick of POS Computer trucks faulting and failing on every little dribble.

I am sick of shop bosses asking me whatsmatta? Why? I don't know. Its a computer issue your shop can fix it or give me a key to one of them bobtails in your remuda deep in the far corner with 50 others.

Taking care of drivers? Just lost a weeks pay? Fine. Pay me. Then pay the shop bill.

The rest of it is corporate boilerplate marketing BS for the gullible who don't know yet what they are getting into.

Yeah, that would hurt. Most of my check comes from OT and voluntary weekend runs. I burn my 70 most weeks.
It might be your calling S69 .

Maybe. I'm always looking for ways to learn new skills I can take elsewhere. If I don't have to pay for it, that's even better. If I can paid for it, that's great.

Maybe I'll slip into the shop today and see if somebody can answer questions for me.

While you are there observe their tools/boxes. Get ready to spend several thousand for a startup tool set. Then be prepared to update your tool inventory every year for the changes, especially emission systems.
