I see ABF is hiring. I wonder if I apply for Road Driver at South Chicago, would I work five days a week, or new hire not work but one or two days a week? Can I get a South Chicago Road Driver to give me some information?
Thanks.

if it is like a year or so ago you work steady. 6 dispatches 48 hrs of 12 disp. 72 hrs off slow around holiday (due to hog board dispatch). alot of weekend work if you dont mind working the weekends. you can work your log to have extra time off. over all good place to work once you understand the system. if you do not live close to there it can be a pain with the hotels (get costly if you have to wait for a work call) and have to get a second days room.if you live close and dont mind knowing when your time off will be i would recomend it good luck. be very honest on the app. they check everything!

South Chicago

The city operation is Local 705 .
The road and dock operation are Local 710 at South Chicago .

I work for Big R and was told by my B.A. this morning to start looking for another job so I will spending the rest of my Sunday afternoon filling out an application for ABF in S. Chicago. Wish me luck. Hope my kids like the Bears!!:funky:

I got the call today that they want me to come in for an interview. the funny thing about it is they suggested that I do my interview at the Dayton, OH. terminal because I live close to that terminal even though I will be going to work as a line-haul driver in Chicago Heights. Does anyone have a clue what the interview consist of. Any and all advice with this would be greatly appreciated.

skinny when I interviewed 2.5 years ago it was with the line-haul supervisor and it was very informal. They just wanted to see me face to face and talk about what was already on their application. They'll just ask you a few questions and get a chance to look you in the eye.

Just be relaxed and I think you'll be fine. I think the interview is a way to find out if you answer questions pertaining to your work history the same as you answered on the app and to see if you seem like a straight up guy.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response cdlholder. Do you know very much about the Chicago terminal such as why are they they the only terminal hiring and will I be able to get steady work out of there?

You raise a good question that a SCH road driver might be able to answer better than I. Dayton has not hired since 2006, and the bottom 20-25 are either laid off or starving on the board--all while SCH keeps hiring and training. I sometimes think I should do what you're doing and transfer up there.

The only plausible explanation I've heard about the turnover is that Chicagoland offers so many other job opportunities that a lot of drivers leave for jobs that have schedules that they like better.

From what I understand you will have pretty steady work. ltl for lyfe's answer above is in-line with what has been told to me by newer SCH road drivers.

Thanks again cdl holder for such a quick response. My interview is on Tuesday and I will let you know how it goes for me. I hope I am making the right decision because I plan to move my family up there and make a career at ABF.

Yes ABF is a good place to work .
The information I've heard, is that since Chicago is a MAJOR point of RAILING trailers, If ABF lays off any Chicago based road drivers (Local 710), they are NOT ALLOWED to put anything on the rail out of Chicago .
I don't know if this is a local thing with Local 710 or this applies to other major rail hubs as well .
Hope that helps . I know if my job goes away, I'll be knocking at ABF's door. I like green anyway!!!

My application didn't make it past Fort Smith (I applied in Chicago Hts). They rejected me due to a poor credit rating (which I didn't even know I had, but my wife managed to hide a few things from me).

I got a letter. I think the guy in the Heights name was Sergio? He couldn't beleive it, said it never happened before. I had a couple of guys I worked with at Rudolf that went to work there and I beleive they're still there. I should've went and applied right away after Rudolf closed, as it was I went on the road for Crete and let my wife handle the bills and in that short time she screwed things up.

Well hear goes the latest. This morning I went thru my interview process. It was pretty painless. I was told that I would be contacted in a day or two to get set up for physical and drug screen. Here is where it got interesting though, when I got back to my car which is where I left my cell phone the railroad that I had put in an application for contacted me to inform me of an interview that I plan to attend next wednesday. When it rains it POURS!!!

Wow, good luck with that. Railroad would probably be the way to go, especially if you don't have to move your family to take the RR job.

I've often thought about the RR but I think that the constraints of the rail, the slow speed, and the whistle blowing all the time would be enough to drive a truck driver crazy. Also, no more XM radio.

I was contacted by the H.R. person from Ft. Smith this morning trying to verify employment from a co. I worked for 9 years ago and I told her I would get the info she needed. 5 hrs. later the guy from Chicago calls me to inform me they have put a freeze on hiring and I was more than welcome to re-apply in the spring.
