How come SJTC was removed from the boneyard thread? There was some good war stories on that thread that I enjoyed about that company…especially being a former employee myself.

Anybody out there have any memories of that regional powerhouses LTL from it’s hey days? Would love to hear from any drivers who are still with us to chime in. What do ya say?

AGREE, in NE St.J was the big dog.
I met the owner's son while we both were in college.
He later offered me a job when they bought Woodin to
get upstate NY rights, but I was happy at Branch at that time.
Competed against them for 30 years working for 3 competitors.
Met many of STJ people at traffic functions and at arbitration hearings.
Last week at Oxford Casino in Maine saw an old timer (like me)
with a St,J jacket.

022 Moonachie ave.Carlstadt New Jersey I remember Shusters was right across the street
That was actually Pilot's terminal you're thinking of. Schuster had a terminal on Polito Ave in Lyndhurst. I worked casual P&D at Schuster in Lyndhurst often over the years. Of course after Pilot bought Schuster they brought the men and equipment into the Pilot terminal. I worked casual P&D and road for Pilot many times both before and after the Schuster buyout.

PS - And before St. J moved into the Carlstadt location it was occupied by Eastern Freightways where I also worked casual P&D and road occasionally. That was after Eastern bought Associated Transport. (Are you confused yet?) :smile new:

SJTC was our interline partner at Northwest/Nationsway Transport for the east coast & it worked well. We loaded everything to Harrisburg Pa. as if it was our terminal from California. When SJTC closed Jerry McMorris, NW owner, made his fatal mistake & tried to do east coast on his own. We were gone in 1999.

I was a professional casual for about 4 years. Loved it even though Mrs. Hookman hated it. Would do P&D and was hosteled for Union Pacific Railroad at the L.A. ramp. :1036316054: All the companies treated casuals good because they knew if they didn't you wouldn't be back.

Always had uncashed checks in my wallet. Crescent Truck Lines typed " Terminated Daily" on the top of their checks for casuals. One day I went to the grocery store with my wife & a cashier we sorta knew asked about it. I told her they keep firing me but I'm getting better at my occupation & trying to improve. I pushed our cart away as the wife stayed there explaining things. :438:
