Results suggest truckload carrier back on the road to profitability

More freight and higher rates gave Swift Transportation a $19.6 million net profit in the second quarter, compared with a $23.1 million loss a year ago.

The results indicate Swift is back on the road to sustainable profitability after several years of losses and an $806 million initial public offering last year.

Operating revenue rose 15.5 percent year-over-year to $850.5 million in the quarter. Revenue excluding fuel surcharges climbed 7.7 percent to $624.1 million.

Freight volumes increased 4.3 percent and truckload rates were up 4.7 percent from a year ago, the company said. Weekly revenue per tractor rose 4.8 percent.....................
