I have a bid route with a start time of 07:30. There is no "dock" description in this bid. I come in at 07:30 and my route is not ready- Do I swipe to dock, for .60 cents less, or do I swipe to P&D and earn the wage I am supposed to?

I have heard it might go something like this,

When I clock on, I go to my trailer and load my route but if I help unload inbd the I must go to dock.

Can someone please elaborate on their experiences with this situation. I am sure this has been questioned.

Thanks

If you are helping unload a trailer that has nothing to do with your route then you are to swipe to dock, if you are helping unload a trailer to get to your freight then stay on P & D.

What we do is pre trip our truck, fuel, hook up our trailer while at the dock, thump tires, get pallet jack and hand truck and usually our trailers are ready by then, otherwise we do everything like I described up above.

Yup, if you have to go work the dock to help get your load ready you swipe to dock. Its usually an hour at the most, so even if you did it every day of the week that comes out to $3 a week.

Sorry to disagree with you, but you dont swipe dock if you are getting your load ready, only if you are not working to get your load ready. That is what our stewards have told us and that is what our TM agrees with.

I guess we do it different here because anytime we have to work the dock we have to swipe to dock.

sppollock has it right, If you are helping unload a trailer that has nothing to do with your route then you are to swipe to dock, if you are helping unload a trailer to get to your freight then stay on P & D.

This was ruled on at the grievance panel shortly after we ratified. Have your TM to ask your Labor Man. He should clear it up. If your TM is hard headed like most and don't want to deal with it, have your BA to look up the ruling and hand it to him in writing.

If your BA can not find the ruling let me know and I will see if I can get it for you. I wrote the grievance that went to the panel.

You should file for back pay when you were swiped to dock while you were loading freight that was "incidental" dock work. You should not have been paid less then your top hourly rate if it was incidental dock work. TE out....

Thanks to all who replied. I have been staying on P&D while focusing on my route and I have not heard anything. When I do I will do what I am told and file a grievance if necessary. I have yet to file one and kind of looking forward to it.
