Opting out assures ‘the’ dream is dead.
UPS situation has proved that non voting is approval. Apathy ensures acquiescing your vote to a representative who claims to have your best interest at heart.
Seniority and voting are the remnants of a life we hold dear.
We all know there are two issues , the voting and the lack of representation by the negotiators.
The vote, everyone is talking about the members screwing theirself , but here lies the problem, when there are two different classfications ( part-time, full time) and the majority is comprised of historically non voters, the cards are stacked against the actual voters. Ups and the union are keenly aware of this and will continue to exploit this situation.
The negotiators, if anyone thinks that they went into this agreement thinking they were going to get all they could for the members, they certainly are more optimistic than I. Many issues with language and work rules did not get addressed in this contract, but the biggest thing is creating a two tier wage system that does not give the same protections to that group as it does to the other, is a absolute deal breaker.
As far as people saying that the union has to implement the contract because of the 2/3 language, why is it that in 2013 they continued to negotiate the supplements, even though they didn't get to the 50% participation level? As far as I know ups didn't sue the union because they didn't just declare the supplements ratified. When the lead negotiator comes out 2days before the count and states that the contract will be impemented if there not enough votes, you know they are not in your corner.
