They are gonna have to offer more than 50k on any buyout.
As far as leaner, still a lot of waste everyday.

He mentioned we still have 2000 doors too many and that city drivers still drive too far in between pickups. More pickups and less drive miles either by getting freight closer to the terminals or multiple shipments from the same customer

The largest waste is paper delivery receipts. The paper cost money, the printers cost money, and the amount of daily hours wasted waiting for bills to print, sort through, scan and file is all waste.
In one day I would estimate that just in paper delivery receipts alone adds 20 - 30 minutes of man hours per driver(and that is on a good day).
That time includes the data entry, print outs, sort through, hand in at end of the day, scanning and filing, them eventually throwing away.

why do you think they move the freight using rail?

Its a little cheaper but takes far longer to get there. A sleeper team can make it from 1 coast to the other in less than 48 hours in most cases. However a the rail takes 5 to 6 days but is around $400 cheaper.

The savings is far greater than what you state. You also are saving maintenance costs on equipment and paying far less in benefit package costs since additional work hours are not being utilized by the workforce.
