i'm doing a little research on the different ltl companies because i'm looking to change driving jobs. there's one odd thing i'm looking for in a new company and i'm hoping someone can give me an answer and some details if the answer is yes. my question is does conway allow employees who have been with them awhile transfer to another terminal. the reason i ask is because alot of my family members have moved to florida in the last few years and im sure i'm gonna want to follow in a few years. i cant sell my house now for financial reasons and from what im told its very hard to find work in florida right now. i avoid job hopping at all costs so i think it would be wise for me to go to a company that allows this if im going to make a switch.

You can transfer to any terminal that has openings. HOWEVER: you will be given a new service date that is effective to the date of transferw which means you will be the bottom regular employee at that terminal.

Yes you can transfer if an opening is available...but you give up your board seniority for the priviledge of doing so.

does that mean you have to start out the pay progression and earned vacation time all over again or do you keep that and start at the bottom of the new terminals seniority list?

You keep your pay and vacation time...benefits...all those things associated with company seniority

Your board seniority will be at the bottom...for bid purposes and scheduling vacations. Just as if you were a new hire.

Pay will vary pending on where you transfer in and out of ... transferring around the conway system is not recommended by me ...

thanks for the quick responses everyone. wondering, other than the reasons already mentioned why do you say that? i feel confident they'll consider me if i apply but as i already said i'm sure the day will come when i'll want to do this so its important to me to know what i'm getting into.

i wouldn't even bring it up companyclown. i know they don't want to hear that. that's one of the things that comes to mind. can a scm deny a transfer for someone whose been there awhile or is it company policy to allow a transfer if the terminal you want to go to needs people? thanks again for the responses.

Transferring is allowed, but it is a rather rare occurance. You have to have been at your barn for at least a year past your 90,,,,,,,,,,,,,,be squeaking clean (no write ups for anything), and there be an opening at the place you want to go. So you are going to be the bottom of the board where you start, get the first year and a half or so done (which will be the worst part of your entire career), and then, transfer to a new place, and start over at the bottom yet again..........That's doing some hardcore "Bush" twice, so yes, it's allowed, but you sure don't see it happen very often. And, everyone I know who has done it, has regretted the decision at some point.

For guys that haven't been with the company all that long, it is not to terrible. Been here a year and go somewhere else and start over again? Not that bad. One thing that everyone left out is that your seniority also counts in case of layoffs. Since you are on the bottom, guys with less company time will get laid of first. Good luck.

a little time off could be a good thing every once in awhile. i've never lived beyond what i can easily afford. when conway lays you off do they call you back when things pick back up or is laid off another word for fired there?

Its called 'economic termination'...means you're fired.

you mean if the manager likes you and the job you do he would hire someone new when needed rather than call you back? has conway laid off many during this long recession?

In many cases the company is hiring.

But to answer your question...if you were in good standing when terminated you would most likely be called before someone unknown to the company and would have the opportunity to return...albeit as a new hire.

The policy sucks...but it is what it is.

If you hire on with Con-way and then transfer later, you take all your seniority with you when it comes to pay, vacation, and lay-offs. You lose your seniority when it comes to Job Selections though. If you work at one service center for 10 years and then transfer to another service center, you go to the bottom of driver list which means when it comes time to select a job for the year, everyone who was already at that service center chooses before you, even the guy who has only worked for the company for 6 months. However, if some drivers are laid off, everyone at that service center with less time served in the company than you will get laid off before you. Make sense???

As far as how many have been laid off during the recession, I can only speak for my part of the world. At my service center we laid off 18 drivers at the end of 2008 If I remember correctly. All were brought back within 6 months and new drivers were hired to replace the rest that did not want to come back. There have not been any lay-offs since then.

thanks to all who replied to my questions. especially you radman. you made things crystal clear and it sounds like a very nice policy to have. if you didn't go to the bottom everyone would never know when someone was going to move to town and bump you down a notch. it could happen over and over again. i'd just be happy that they allow it. thanks again! not sure where i'm gonna end up or who will have me with the lack of driver demand right now but conway will be on the wish list.
