Truckload carrier makes gains as tight capacity boosts pricing

Werner Enterprises increased its net profit 31 percent year-over-year to $27.5 million as revenue rose 11 percent to $515.9 million in the second quarter.

The nation’s third-largest truckload carrier increased its net profit as a percentage of total revenue to 5.3 percent from 4.5 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Werner also increased profit 68 percent from the $16.3 million net profit reported in the first quarter, which was an unusually strong start to 2011.

Higher rates and strict cost control improved Werner’s profitability. The trucker took in and earned more money despite driving fewer miles in the quarter.

Werner is one of several truckload carriers, including Heartland Express and Marten Transport, reporting fatter profits for the quarter despite sluggish freight demand.

Trucking revenue, net of fuel surcharges, increased 2.2 percent to $333.7 million. Fuel surcharge revenue surged 55.8 percent to $103.2 million............................
