ABF | You Guys At Abf Have All The Fun! :-)

Seriously though, I think the driver might be facing charges of reckless driving. Not that he should, just that he might. I wonder what any of us would have done in this situation. This heroin-addled space cadet dressed in the uniform of the day jumps the median barrier covered in blood and flags down the ABF truck. Driver stops, thinking he/she needs assistance, and he climbs on the hood and begins hitting the windshield with a steel object. This may be one case where the driver camera may save his bacon. However, it may also show how badly his vision was obscured by him and the shattered windshield to attempt to continue driving. What he did was understandable but inappropriate. He endangered himself and other traffic with this. The proper response I think, would have been to pull to the shoulder and exit thru the passenger door and get out of the truck and get away from this loon and call police or someone else would make that call for you no doubt. If he comes after you on the ground, then you have other problems. Yeah I know this is Monday morning QBing, but it is worth considering. This is similar to the Fed Ex driver driving off from the protesters in Atlanta? and wrapping the dude around his dolly wheels. I hope he doesn't get charged. It will be interesting to follow this one. I wonder if next month's safety video will discuss this. We live in interesting times. I had a couple of teenagers throw a huge chunk of ice from the sidewalk thru my windshield in a Garrett Freightlines Mack cabover on a city street in Boise one winter evening in1983. I HAD to stop. It spiderwebbed the windshield. The police authorized me to drive back to the terminal under poiice escort several blocks. They REALLY wanted the triples out of traffic ASAP. I was on my way to Ely Nevada. I swapped tractors and talked to safety over the phone for a while and cleaned the broken glass out of my clothes and resumed the trip. The 2 punks disappeared into a trailer park when I chased them. I was yelling at them to stop, but I'm glad they didn't. I would have beaten them with my bud bar I grabbed as I got out and probably went to prison. They were never caught. I made that response up also as I went and just got lucky. I was white-hot pissed.
A 60 year old line driver trying to out run a meth head? He needs to memorize the phrase "I was in fear for my life"

Dude what you smoking, every body claims victim now days, the guy on the hood should have been thrown off, the driver could have done it very easily, if anything he saved guys life and possibly several others. Let’s say he put 4ways on and drives 10 mile an hour on interstate and caused a wreck that killed a family? His actions notified traffic behind him something was wrong and probably alerted other drivers to slow down. Driver should get an award for not hurting anyone in a situation that no one can predict. He very easily could have locked up brakes at 40 mph and shot guy off of hood, instead he kept guy occupied hanging on till police could dhow up.

Ahh,...yes. As I said.....extenuating circumstances. Apparently this guy jumped on the hood and started to beat his way into the cab. Don't blame the driver for trying to shake him off. You ain't stopping, getting out and..."reasoning"....with this guy.......

Imagine if the nutcase did this with a family in a minivan........100 mph straight through to the Virginia state line,....screaming all the way.......

Drugs can make people do strange things..........
I would have to replace my windshield for I could not see. Why? To many bullet holes & red tenting making it hard to see. von.

He shouldn't have stopped. Period. He could never have climbed on if he kept moving. Just call it in... Once they involve you in their psychosis, you got problems. Your reactions from that point on have consequences for both of you under the law. Do you stop and chat with every derelict panhandler that you meet on the sidewalk? Neither do I...Like I said, I hope he doesn't get charged or disciplined for this. It was a truly nightmarish scenario for him. There was a time when the unspoken code of professional drivers mandated stopping to render assistance, but that was a different time and different America and it ended with the cellphone, as far as I am concerned, first-on-scene traffic accidents still excepted. There are very valid reasons for this, not only what happened here, but by stopping you increase the likelyhood of being struck from behind by impaired or distracted drivers. I can't count how many times I called things in to 911 on the road and listened to how it was followed up on the scanner. Believe me when I say it was every time..

BTW: if he does get charged, someone should start a gofundme to cover his attorney fees. The union should, but probably won't. A good attorney could end this quickly at the hearing if there is any justice left in America.

I am sure lawyers are lined up to bring a lawsuit against ABF. I am also sure the company expects to have legal action taken against it for endangering the life of the hood clinger & will pay an out of court settlement.

He may have stopped because traffic stopped in front of him. Or he maybe he did not want to run him over. Give the seasoned driver a break.

I think we all are understanding of the driver's predicament. None of us know the circumstances,.......and there are probably about 3,000 different responses the driver could have chosen.

The best anyone can say is that,....the driver's decades of experience had him choose his response.....I'm sure the driver prioritized the public safety first,....Obviously, no other cars or people were involved,........
ABF's equipment and load second,........If the guy was just clinging,....the driver probably would've just stopped. The Lunatic was attempting to enter the cab violently,......and if he had got in,......that load would've been all across the highway....

And his own personal safety last,......a lunatic hammering on the windshield is not a....reasonable person.

yep, I bet the trial lawyers will be chomping at the bits to represent the addict...

Fair point taken. As I said, I'm on his side in this. We all can take a lesson from this perhaps, if we're willing, whether on the job or off. See Bob Dylan's recording of "the times they are a changin" for perspective on this.
We just need to decide when we have seen enough "change"
