historically been $10-$12 per share above ABF. They remind me of a hot dog going down the road with yellow mustard. It has always irritated me because I don't even consider them a top tier carrier. Any thoughts?

It's all on how many shares the company puts up for sale. Remember when YRCW stock devided? It raised their stock price but you actually own less of the company. Just depends on how many shares of stock are on the market. Just the extreme way of showing you is if i have a company that is worth 1000 dollars and I put up 5 shares for sale on the market. The stock would be 200 a share. If I have the same company with a 1000 dollars and I sell a 1000 shares on the market, the value would be a dollar a share.

Define top tier? Are you talking about the size of the company or how the company is managed and how well does the company move freight thru it's system.

I am not a company cheerleader nor am I expecting a call to be in the next poster boy video. However, I can tell you what I see. I've been working Linehaul for almost 20 years. The top company management is very good, they can count the beans. Like everyone else, Saia has lost freight over the last few years, but they have led us to a raise every year, the benefits are good, the equipment is good, and the freight moves on schedule. It's pretty well organized. It doesn't make any difference whether you are a terminal guy or a driver, if you cause a preventable freight delay, you will hear about it.

There can be a lot of reasons why Saia's stock is higher than ABF. Look at the 2016 2nd quarter results links below. If you wanted to invest in a trucking stock which company would you choose. Both companies move the freight.

You can't overlook the fact that ABF is union, which carries a lot of ongoing extra financial expenses with being union. Expenses that will only grow year after year.
Saia, none of the above.
If I was an investor, I would pick Saia. I am, I did, and it's paid off pretty well over the last few months.

Thanks for your candor...this helps me to understand...That dang union!???!??

In the LTL field, who else is non union? I know that FedEx is but I've never thought to look. As far as the money goes, Saia makes money, but not a whole lot compared to some of the bigger LTL's.

You got me. I used to be able to count to 20 but then I lost one of my pinkie toes and now I can only go to 19.:idunno:

Don't forget the difference in Labor costs. Since trucking is one of the industries not covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938,............along with tree-sap gatherers , motion -picture operators, and fishermen.......many non-Union companies don't have to pay overtime after 8 or 40.

Union contracts still....for the most part....limit the use of purchased transportation for linehaul,........and they don't classify employees as......"contractors"........to eliminate paying S.S., Workers Compensation insurance, health care insurance..........or pensions.

For example,.....O.D. and ABF are roughly the same size,......yet O.D.'s Labor costs are probably about half of what ABF's are.

Naive people would say that's a good thing , and all companies should shed their Union obligations and make some real money for the investors..........but then naive people aren't thinking about unfair firings and layoffs, no protection of Labor rights.......and certainly no pension for the old and worn out.........

When the NMFA was strong, the non-Union companies tried to match their wages and benefits,........because they couldn't hire......."good"...... employees if they didn't. The NMFA was an industry benchmark .

That's all gone now, and everything is in free fall. Wall Street benefits and working families suffer.

It will get worse........

Yes it will, I wonder if it will ever get better or if the industry will get turned over to the illegal aliens. I can't tell you enough how glad I am that I am on the downside and soon enough to be out rather than a youngster hoping to get 20 years or more of a prosperous career out of the freight industry.

Its gonna be replaced by automation just like every other thing in the world. Wetware (humans) is very flawed and expensive and there a folks who do nothing but try to remove it from the workforce. Eventually they will even be able to automate manager duties but no one will notice.
How is that for a Monday pep talk lol.

While I'm at it, I might as well completely rain on the parade.......

We lost the grievance at the Local panel about whether the company can force from the bottom on ALL Holidays, instead of just the two SPECIFICALLY named Holidays ....

Clear contract language. .......And the two Union panel members agreed with the company,........ didn't even deadlock it........and further eroded our rights and family time....

You can damn betcha those two will never work on a Christmas Eve.........and we know the company guys will be swizzling martinis,....so they won't be working, either....

My B.A. can't believe it either.........Why help the company erode conditions? It's getting harder to say I am a proud Teamster......I guess all rot starts at the top, though.....

If we don't have a change of leadership at the IBT in November,....I'll be getting out of this a little earlier than I was planning.....

Hmmmm, for some strange reason this one does not surprise me. :confused1: We really aren't getting much for our union dues these days, are we?

Yeah,.......I got a Teamster patch on a Guatemalan made uniform delivered by a Union-busting vendor..........Makes me real....."proud"........

But I guess it's better than a Chinese T-shirt that says " I'm With Stoopid" on the back and an arrow pointing to a Teamster emblem........

What totally amazes me is that there still are Freight Teamsters that actually support Hoffa and his various henchmen.......and women.......

I guess the ol' quid pro quo thing is going on...... you......"need" ....to be chairman on this committee, vote for me, and the first....opening......

All you got to do is sell the rank-and-file down the river ..........You don't need to sell your soul to Satan........he don't need something so shrivelled up and puny, anyway.......

Most are just scared to go against the grain. But they damn sure will bitch about it on the van and drivers lounge. I'm losing friends cause I tell them if you won't file on issues or stand up against BA you talking upon deaf ears.

No guts no glory
But they will sell you out in a heart beat had one driver complained bout company not paying on sliding tandems or placards I told him to file on it or just sit an extra 15 to recoup your time. Another driver heard what I was saying and told mgmt on me. I wish I knew who he was I'd damn sure file charges against him at the hall.
