I just wanted to post this. These are my thoughts. You can agree and disagree as you wish.
1. As an employee of one of the largest delivery companies in the world. I believe that if we, as current union members follow certain practices that YRC and other union terminals have followed over the past many many years. Who is to say that in 5-10-15 or whatever amount of years. We do not follow the same suit as YRC!
2. How much is not enough? We all want to bring home the bacon!!! But if we have XXX amount of employees saying I want 28$hr. What kind of financial stranglehold will that put on UPS? I want make money just like the next guy and reap the rewards of great benefits. But if your job was in jeopardy like the folks over at YRC. Would say 20$ or 22$ hr be enough for you to pay the bills? And keep the company focused for another 10 years?
What I am getting at is this. YRC and the formers have been wanting more and more. Which as inflation goes up I believe there needs to be pay increases and such. But the way times are, how much is enough so WE don't put ourselves out of jobs due to economic turmoil! or non turmoil depending on which side of the fence your on.
We would all like to get paid 71$hr like GM. But if your job came down to it would you be willing to be paid like a Toyota employee. They only make 47$hr!
Now granted, 28$hr is nothing, but I am using it as a general figure. Are you willing to put UPS in a position where they cannot afford to pay there employees any more?
All I am getting at is this. We need to watch what these other companies are doing and make sure we don't go down the same path as them. These guys are getting beat up and down!!! Dispatch, without a doubt is the most horribly run. However, WE as drivers need to make sure that as stupid as they are. We don't put UPS into the same situation.
The younger drivers such as myself believe that you need to take them for everything they got, but not to the point where we are ripping them off. That is the reason why YRC is in the situation they are in. Drivers wanted to get paid 28$hr, but if if your job came down to 28 or 24 would you be willing to compromise? We also get a pension, which is way better than a 401K. How many companies offer a pension today? If they don't, why not? Because its expensive thats why!
We currently pay for our benes. I would love to not pay for benes like the parcel guys. Which In our next contract I think we should go for. But, if it comes down to UPS cutting costs dramatically, such as drivers and office staff and sacrificing customer service to keep us happy. Is it really worth it in the long run.
Now let me explain why I wrote this. I have played both sides of the field. I was a district manager for a company for many years before I started driving truck. I got out because I did not want to deal with the corporate BS any more. I have seen P and L's (profit and loss) for those who don't know what it is. When it came down to cutting costs we first looked at our vendors. Then we looked at things like lights and such. then we looked at employees. Employees are what makes a company succesful. However, if you don't have enough employees then you are getting out of the mix of what makes a company succesful to begin with. Customer service!. That is what makes UPS succesful. Customer service, which is what we do every day. Pick up a shippers order on time and delivering it on time, without damaging it!!!
All I am sayin is, just remember our greed and fortune at the time could be our mis-fortune down the road. Remember how fortunate we have it now. As stupid and dumb as our dispatchers are and we want to punch them in the face! Don't put a company in jeopardy for something you may not have in another 10-15-20 years such as YRC.
Just a 2c post.
Have a safe and happy and partysome memorial day, Oh and go Yankees!!!!! Lets hope they kick Phillies butt!!!!!
Peace out!
PS. which I am sure someone on this board is thinking, I am not in any way affiliated with UPS management!! I had to write it. Believe it or not!
