Yellow | Yrc forcing "Dock Workers" to obtain CDL. Rumor or Fact.

I would love to have the opportunity of giving the office people of YRC a fair driving test. :nutkick: Well it looks like I have to work on my back swing a little more,I should try driving with a steel toe boot on the next attempt. :nutkick: OK,I guess the office people can have their CDL now. :nutkick: That last one was for to make sure they use and think safety at all times. :nutkick: That one is for in case they complain about an unfair driving test. :nutkick: I don't know what that last one is for,but I'm sure I can figure it out later. :biglaugh:

Yes they are a trucking company, That had warehouse jobs available ( ie: dock work ) No where on the application or on the company website when you apply for a dock job does it say you will be required to get your CDL's in the future.......... And on another note, For every person that says everyone who works for a trucking company should drive, There is probably one who says why do these people who can't drive a truck allowed to get their CDL's and drive........ Some people are cut out to drive, They are the ones who do go and get training or go get their CDL's.......... Some are not cut out for it, They are the ones who work the dock. Sales, Clerks, Office persons, etc. work for a trucking company as well, Should they get their CDL's as well??

Metalmikex,You are right.many people work the dock because they don`t like to drive or they aren`t cut out for it.What YRC wants is the total flexibility to operate like conway. Do away with the classifications and you have almost the same job as working for conway with the "Privilege" of paying union dues. Bending over backwards to save YRC is taking the teamster membership backwards in pay, pension, and working conditions. Sometimes it seems that the only ones trying to save YRC is the teamster union and the rank and file employees.

Then we can change our name to Yellway.

I don't think that anyone should be forced to get a CDL in order to keep their job. That's B.S. Some people can't stay awake while driving, and others simply are not interested in the responsibilities that come with driving, which is ok with me. They didn't apply for a driving job, so they shouldn't be required to drive against their wishes, just to keep the job that they have so much time invested into.

OK here's my 2 cents worth ( minus 15% ) on this subject .

Can anyone show me where a person has been FORCED to get a CDL to keep there job ? Know saying that I do know some people who where giving the chance to get a CDL( company paid for it ) to protect there job so that when a dock layoff happen they could bump into the P&D pool at that terminal . I also know some people who had a choice either get a CDL ( company paid for it ) our watch as a junior man would be able to transfer to a satellite terminal that has no dock only bids .

Can't give specifics but there are barns where people transferred into or combined with another barn where all were told 'can't transfer to without cdl' or 'get cdl or get laidoff to a junior man. That has one'. I've even heard 'if you transfer you only have 30 days to get one or it's voluntary quit'. Indy had guys transfer to somewhere in Ky (Lou or maybe Bowling Green?); they were supposedly told the latter, about 4 months ago

Several years ago my terminal Mgr. put those of us without licenses on notice, telling us there would come a time when the guys without a CDL may find there was no work for them. I have to admit, it can be a drag sometimes because when they are short on drivers other drivers have to pick up the slack. When they are short of dock help, the drivers again have to pick up the slack by working the dock after their peddle runs.

[/quote]A dockworker who obtains his/her license is nothing less than a new driver which we all were at one time. You have to start somewhere, no one is a "born driver" and accidents do happen, which is something any trucking Co. simply has to accept.

DID YELLOW BUY ROADWAY OR ROADWAY BUY YELLOW!ONLY GOOD THING OUT OF THIS IS ALL THE JERK SHIRTS IN ROCHESTER ARE GONE

Have you been underground for the last two years ? Is this a rhetorical question ( A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question posed for its persuasive effect without the expectation of a reply ) anyways welcome to the board . :grouphug:

If the company you work for says you need to upgrade your skills, such as a new computer program or pull triples or learn to stack, or scan bills, or just move into the 20th century, you need to get with the program, it aint rocket science, its a truck, a little girl can do it. :stir:

Anyone hired in the past 20 years at any barn in Kansas City, has always been required to have a CDL. Anyone coming in to Kansas City on a change has always been required to get a CDL within 60 days. We do have a few with 20 plus years, without CDL's, but they can not be forced on the street. We have had a few non CDL dockworkers forced to the yard to hostle. That was a Yellow's "past practice" here. They always put an extra man out to help train the new man.

My response to this ALWAYS has and always will be shut the F up, quit crying like a bunch of women, and go get your CDL. You work for a truck line god forbid you be licensed to drive one. And save the ol "I was hired to work the dock garbage." Unless you are grandfathered in some how just shut the hell up already and go get that little piece of paper.

I've got to disagree with ya on that. Some people have no interest in driving, or have the confidence that is needed. If they didn't apply to be a driver, why should they be forced to drive? Under your way of thinking........that would also mean that the secretaries should have to go get a CDL if their isn't enough office work right? Because they do work for a trucking company after all. (I'm just being sarcastic with the secretaries part, but it stresses my point.)

If those office workers are being paid driver wages, sure, why not? Are those warehouse workers paid as warehouse workers?( my turn to be sarcastic, sorry)
