FedEx Freight | Just did some union math

Funny you should say that. I used to work for a union carrier. Just found out 21 year driver for the same company was just fired on a whim.

I'm going to call a BS on this post... You didn't mention the company or the union who represented the driver. That's like someone saying they heard from someone that they heard from someone you like to look like the stork on the vlasic pickle jar.... Just sayin......:stirthepot:

Here's the math. FedEx pension=joke. Union pension=something I can actually live on. How about this math. Under teamster insurance the birth of my son cost me ten dollars. My wife had to leave her teamster job to raise our kids. Now we have FedEx insurance. A case of the cold now costs us more than her whole pregnancy. I don't understand why guys don't want a union. Why wouldn't you want to make a stronger work environment for the drivers. Union built the middle class. Unions are the reason we make the amount of money we now make. If Conway goes in also the teamsters will be as strong as ever and drivers across the country can be proud to know they have a career that they built and own. We are professional drivers and deserve to be treated with respect. Not like an average employee. I consider myself valuable to the company I work for. I feel like my services to FedEx should have a contract through a third party who will back me up when needed. If you're so against this quit watching television. The athletes, actors, and broadcasters on the news networks have contracts and unions. The executives of our company have contracts and are able to negotiate for their wages and benefits. Why the double standard. It's more about job security and being valued than anything else to me. When an operation manager told me after I had an altercation with a supervisor that he had to support his supervisors I realized we needed representation because there is no one there to back us up. The union math makes sense. 2.5 hours of pay per month=dignity to know I'm more than a number that can be terminated without representation.

If I were a betting man you better believe they are going to push. A large scale trucking company has not been unionized in quite a while since Overnight. Ive been saying this all over this thread look at the NMFA agreement with UPS Freight and compare it to what you have now. A few pennies......really. From what I've seen Fedex is very far behind on UPS Freight as far as wages and benefits. Why would you settle for a few pennies. No contract negotiator worth their salt is going to present that to rank and file for a vote under any circumstances.

I'm sure I will catch heck for this but what the heck. UPSF is not part of the NMFA if that's not what you meant by that I apologize in advance sorry. Yes the Teamsters might push and they might not I don't know, I would bet Fedex will push but again I don't know. But comparing this organizing effort underway now is nothing like the UPSF organizing effort as I understand it. The way I understood it UPS pretty much invited the Teamsters in, or at least did not object to much. So to me its apples and oranges, this may be more like the Overnight effort which did not end well.

I have been watching all of this not saying anything but I have to tell you this , all of you drivers that are counting on getting some superior health care , a great big pension , a different type of seniority , not working on the dock , getting rid of purchase transportation etc etc might want to wake up . Until a contract is negotiated nothing will change , once negotiations start who knows , but one thing I will bet you this that FedEx will not roll over and agree to a contract that will change a lot .

FedEx is profitable the Union companies that are still around are struggling at best with the exception of UPS and they opted out of the Union Pension several years ago .

Once negotiations start how hard will the Union push , they are a business and they need money will they really get us what they are promising or will we get just what we have now with the exception of paying dues . My guess is the Union will not push too hard , they will get us something maybe a few pennies or some changes to seniority and tell us look what we have done for you and when the next contract comes up we will get you more .

All of us have the right to vote the union in or not but I am a loss when it comes to what benefit I will get for paying these guys to represent me , I will get off my soap box now and shut up for another few years .

I understand what you believe... We've been told that for years, by this company. But when you look into the facts, you see that we have lost ground EVERY year since FedEx purchased the 3 companies that became FedEx Freight. They've made the decision to pay only the minimum that the market will bear. That thinking drives our deteriorating benefit package, as well.

Without going way long on this post, just know that per FedEx's own numbers, there is quite a lot of room for improvement, while still maintaining their status at the "king of low pay and benefits as a percentage of revenue". See my avatar for a reference as to how we stack up against other companies.

We were once the best company to work for, bar none. If you pay attention to the numbers, we could be "among" the best again, without breaking the company.

Oh, what the heck, I like this visual, so I'll post it (again):

I would like to ask you a question Hoot Owl, you remember many years ago? You and I argued like brothers about the union. Just wondering if you remembered that time so long ago.

Just thought about something just wondering what some of y all think if the union is in all 300 plus terminals let's say we have a out 15000 drivers and all are paying 51 bucks a month that's 765000 dollars a month the union is collecting from us and doing what with all that money. Your talking several millions dollars really quick In a matter of a few years. Sounds like a big money making scheme to me
Driver it is a scam. First how do you propose that fedex will just hand us a golden parachute. They wont so what would we if fedex says you are only getting current health and pension. What would the plan be then

So, you're saying we're not worth more?... Or just, not worth more, to FedEx? YOU must think that, since you do consistently argue their point for them. That's the only logical conclusion...

No sir, they are not part of the NMFA nor will any other company yet to organize.
No as far as organizing FedEx going to be worse than Overnight.
Overnight was essentially a one trick pony owned by Union Pacific.
I would go so far as to say Overnight was the tool Union Pacific used to perfect their intermodal operations.
When Overnight organized, UP blew them off as the loss of revenue from disruptions at Overnight would be inconsequential.

Now, FedEx on the other hand is quite a bit different.
If they fail to bargain in good faith, we can not strike as we would lose our jobs.
But, do you think Fred wants to explore some of the following possible consequences?
Even though we can't strike, we can put up informational pickets, a constitutionally protected form of free speech.
Does he want to find out if his pilots will cross such a line?
Does he want to find out if customers will cross a line at Express locations?
Or drop boxes with a picketer.

Might be interesting to watch this one play out.

I've seen many of Fedex pilots. They wear the standard pilots uniform. Sorry no purple jackets, fedex ties or Fedex emblems on their uniform. They could be flying for Fedex or United. You really want to put pickets at the front door of the airport? Hope your covering the parking fee.

Fedex Express Terminals: Most small shipments are handled at Fedex Office. Your going to put pickets in front of all Fedex Office locations? All I want to do is use the copy machine. For sure the Fedex Express driver will cross the picket line at their terminals. Your going to give your packages to striking Express employee in front of an express terminal? Don't forget to bring cash, they don't except credit cards. The loneliest guy in town is the guy passing out informational packets at a striking express terminal. Don't forget to have them copied at Fedex Office. Don't yell at me RC I'm old.

Case you didn't know UPS only dropped out of the pension ONLY in the central states area and they had to pay a penalty for that . The rest of the country is still in tact untouched . Could be if you learned a little more about the union and how they benefit the employees ya might think differently.
