Mr. Soehl doesn't have a great track record with ..."marketing points".......Not with me, anyway. We filed a grievance about ABF using interline carriers into areas right next to our terminal to deliver freight,........and lost. Mr. Soehl, at ERJAC hearings, said ABF has the right to conduct business as they see fit,.......EVEN IF it makes NO logical sense, and they are losing money by doing it.
And,.....He also said there is no such thing as a jurisdictional area......Every terminal has a list of zip codes that makes a mockery out of contractual language about jurisdiction by looking like a map made out of Swiss cheese.
We had filed a grievance about the PGH terminal running a U-Pack 85 miles south through Farmington, Pa..........a point that Greensburg ROUTINELY delivers,....less than 30 miles from the GBG terminal. Mr. Soehl said ABF had every right to do that,.......and the next week, ABF bobtailed a guy from PGH 85 miles south again to pick up the loaded U-Pack. At that time, the Greensburg terminal had a customer that we were dropping sets at in Smithfield Pa.........15 miles from the U-Pack. The reason I'm mentioning all these points is that anyone can get a map of S.W. Penna.......and see how stupid and counterproductive it was,........yet Mr. Soehl felt there was nothing wrong. Did I mention that GBG had guys who were only getting 3 days a week at that time?
So,.....I'm not sure how Mr. Soehl feels about outside carriers, jurisdiction, and job preservation.
I know that a lot of former Con-way/XPO road drivers sit at home, too, watching HapHazard Freight, Inc. run their linehaul. Best of both worlds...........move freight on someone else's truck for el-cheapo rates,......and when there's a truck wreck because El-Cheapo doesn't bother to train drivers properly, or screen them,....or make sure they have HAZ-MAT licenses,......and they endanger the public,......Well,....there's no liability involved to the company foisting the freight off on Wing'N'A Prayer Freight Lines and their marginally qualified, low-rate, low-paid, semi-enslaved employees,..............while letting the experienced, trained-properly, driver sit at home. Who cares about the motoring Public?
