DENVER -- A Colorado Department of Transportation highway worker remained in critical condition Tuesday after he was struck by a tractor-trailer east of Denver.

Roger Baxter, 56, was hit Monday morning while picking up debris along Interstate 70, about four miles east of Watkins, Colo. He was airlifted by helicopter to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo., for treatment of his injuries.

Investigators said that Baxter was on the right shoulder, walking around his Freightliner truck when the big rig struck him at about 11:33 a.m. A co-worker immediately went to his aid and called for help.

The driver of the big rig stopped after the crash.

State Patrol troopers took James Pinkston, 59, of Kingman, Kan. into custody on suspicion of careless driving causing injury, a misdemeanor.

Investigators said the semi was not speeding but was at or near the posted speed limit of 75 mph on that section of I-70.
