A United Parcel Service truck caught fire Thursday in Myrtle Beach, destroying nearly a thousand packages, said Todd Cartner of Horry County Fire Rescue.

Cartner said a tractor-trailer carrying about 1,100 to 1,200 packages caught fire while the vehicle was traveling from Columbia to its local office at 200 George Bishop Parkway in Fantasy Harbour
UPS spokesperson Stephen Boggs said officials think a broken spring on the trailer caused the fire.

The investigation into the fire, conducted by UPS rather than the fire department, is ongoing.

'Without knowing what was in each package, it would take us days to go through this,' Cartner said. 'They know what was in those packages better than we do, so we'll let them take care of it.'

UPS employees opened the doors to the first of two trailers the truck was pulling about 5:52 a.m. and noticed the fire.

Cartner said the employees used 14 fire extinguishers, but they were unable to extinguish the blaze.
