There are solutions to this crisis that a Trump administration could pursue if they are serious about helping workers and retirees. A bill sponsored by former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders called the Keep Our Promises Act would help save multiemployer pension plans without making cuts to current benefits by providing federal funds to the PBGC and giving it new authority to help struggling plans.

So what? Hoffa has been collecting $65,000 per year cash paid into his pension plan for over 16 years. The Retirement & Family Plan (an exclusive fund reserved only for Int'l Union officers and the Int'l staff) which is fully funded and fully protected.
Hoffa can retire at any time with a lump sum pmt of $2,000,000 and free family health care coverage for life.
Last year the IBT put $16,000,000 into the Retirement & Family Plan to make sure those lump sum payouts are fully funded and protected. The only thing Hoffa has "earned" is a prison cell. Hoffa has done nothing for the retirees.
Also consider that Thomas Nyhan collects $694,000 every year plus generous percs for completely mismanaging the CSPF. One can only imagine what HIS retirement pkg will be. The aggregate annual pay for all 31 of the Fund's top executives amounts to over $8,000,000 per year.
This makes Trump's $168,000 annual pension seem like peanuts, especially considering it come out of the pockets of Hollywood elites that have amassed fortunes in the hundreds of millions of dollars. I say good for Trump.
Also consider that Trump has promised to refuse to take any salary (he will take $1.00) for being President. That salary totals about $520,000 annually (including all percs). Obama has been spending more than that just going on a lot of single golf outings on Air Force One. According to Secret Service cost reports, and the Freedom of Information Act, travel for Obama which nearly always include Air Force One (and a couple more planeloads of Secret Service) has totaled over $97 Million in 8 years with $85 Million of that on personal vacations, that included ski trips and golf outings with family and many "friends" and relatives (AKA bloodsuckers) all packed into Air Force One with all expenses paid by American taxpayers.
For example: The annual Obama trip to Hawaii in Dec 2015 (which began on 12/18/15 and ended 1/3/16 cost US taxpayers $4,823,206. That was the cost of ONLY ONE vacation trip. The most recent one was most likely similar or more costly.
These numbers make the $168,000 that Trump is getting from Hollywood millionaires and billionaires seem paltry and that amount does not come out of taxpayers' pockets.

I must have missed something...I don't see the OP as disparaging Trump or his pension. I just see it pointing out that Trump has a little skin in the pension game and questions if he will work on a solution to our pension woes.

That is...if the story is true.

No he won't, that's not what's he's about. Too mistakes were made and if there was a fix it would have happened with a Democratic in office. Trump will however be good for economics would will help us retain jobs and grow. Not sure we will ever gain market share but we can certainly grow with the economy, make a profit and have a small prayer to get through 2019.

I think you are right. While there is plenty of blame to go around way back to the '80's that include Republicans, Democrats as well as at least two Congressional Oversight Committees assigned to "watch" for corruption and mismanagement in both the CSPF and the IBT. Nobody saw anything. The corruption and poor management continues to this day. The Dems could have done something when Nyhan went to the Dem controlled Congress in 2010, but they didn't. The can was just kicked down the road. Nothing was done since except the Dems getting ERISA abolished in Dec 2014. After that, it was already too late to help without a massive gov't bailout. The Dems at that point were only worried about getting VOTES. The Treasury Dept. was told to NOT approve the cuts in an election year. Bad press for the DNC and Hillary, so they just decided to sit on it till after the election. If Hillary won, the cuts could go forward, no more bailouts. Too bad for the retirees, but the DNC knows voters have short memories and the Teamsters have very little political power now anyhow. IF by some crazy chance Trump wins or the Repubs take control of Congress, then the CSPF mess can be dumped into THEIR laps and blame THEM for the pension cuts.
I hope the economy does come booming back. That is our only hope, but unfortunately for us, Nyhan is still running things and the $20 billion needed bailout is unlikely to happen.

The trumpkins in here had better realize that wall street is going only going to tolerate just so much of trumps buy American line.
He will either resign, be impeached, or they'll ask him nicely "lead or silver". Then you'll have president Pence, and we'll get the america we
all want. free of unions, social security, medicare, medicaid.you know entitlements. At least for anyone under 65. The pension you think you deserve? that's an entitlement, for"communistic socialist unuin members" that king barry is making the 'murican people pay for. Isn't it funny that with all America
has to offer, the only people we could get to run for presiident were known as the "worlds worst law firm" and we end up with clinton and trump?. And many of us in here served, In my case,it was a while back when Ivan and the Red menace was what kept us awake at night. Now we find out vlads a good guy! A real can do conservative that the donald can work with.
I'm going to get flamed for this, too bad, If in a year I'm wrong, and everythings coming up roses I'll admit i was wrong. I detest clinton, and obama.
but i'm not blaming 2 people for every stinking thing thats gone wrong for the last 8 years. Everyones been asleep at the switch, and we let talk radio do our thinking for us. Nothings as simple as they make it out to be. Anyways, enough ranting. i could have flown to cuba with this hijacking, and i agree wholeheartedly with the comments about hoffa and nyhan that were posted previously. Spot on. I'll still walk a picket line with anyone here if it would ever come to that. And remember, opinions arelike a$$holes we all have them.

Maybe, maybe not. I think the only thing that Trump might do well is to cut spending, & increase jobs. If he goes after SS, retirement he will fail. If he tries to have a balanced approach, maybe it will work. But, taking a big hammer to everything, he will fail. He has a background of running business. With riches along with failures. We voted for change in 16 like we did in 08. Totally different goals with different results. I wish him & the country the best, all of us will need it. von.

In spite of cutting our military to the bone and denying them the spare parts and equipment they need not only to fight with but in some cases to stay alive, Obummer has more than doubled our nat'l debt to very nearly $20 Trillion, which is way more than anyone can even conceive of or imagine. Here is a visual to help show what ONE TRILLION in $100 dollar bills looks like.

Remember, this is only ONE trillion dollars in $100 bills. Our nat'l debt is now twenty times what you see in this visual. In a number it is $20,000,000,000,000.
Our military will have to rebuilt and resupplied which will be very costly to the Trump administration. Then Senator Obama once called President Bush "irresponsible" and "unpatriotic" in a speech before Congress in 2008 for letting the national debt rise by $4 trillion in President Bush's 8 year term. Obama has caused the nat'l to rise over $10 trillion in HIS 8 year term. Hypocritical or what? The bar graph shown is the $10,000,000,000,000 the nat'l debt was at when Obama took over. Double it now.

Yup agreed and republican budget hawks were right there with him. but i can see where you're going Henry. No one is going to bad mouth trump. Not on your watch. and if for some reason it doesn't work out, we can still go back to the last 8 years and put the fault where.it belongs. i get that. Cutting the military? yup you're right again, congress had nothing to do with it. Read my post again, I'm not an obama fan, but spread the blame out. but we'll just agree to disagree. If I'm doing better in a year i'll be the first one to come back and tell you you were right. I won't expect the same thing because if things are worse, it'll still be the previous administrations fault right. Oh and weed? never touch the stuff.

First and foremost, this thread should be in the politics forum.

With that said, the future is in the hands of the members of the Republican party and the Democrats who are willing to step up and enter a substantive dialogue. If those conversations occur and true compromise is met, success will be had.

If Trump can post an agenda that is in the best interests of America, without the use of social media, I will listen.

Sorry Elwood. To be honest with you I hardly ever care about the thread. Maybe I should. But I see a post I want to respond to, and I do. On the other hand the mods can & have the power to move the conversation or admonish us for straying. I will try to improve in my adhering to the rules. But, to be honest, I shall try not so hard. von.

I think you're safe for a while Von. The last I saw of KK he was still asleep. :hide: :hilarious:

I just miss R-14.

OK.Sorry about the "weed" comment. That was supposed to be deleted. Unlike some others, I am capable of changing my mind before I put my foot in my mouth (most of the time). I realized that was a stupid remark and meant to withdraw it. Too bad some blacks like Al Sharpton and Congressman Lewis aren't capable of doing the same.
Which brings up another point....Al Sharpton still owes $4.5 million in back taxes but he's still on MSNBC every day blowing hot air and hate about Donald Trump to create even more racial divide. Why? It's pathetic that these black "leaders" of the hatred movement of the white race are not called what they are - ⓇⒶⒸⒾⓈⓉ hate mongers. They do it simply to line their own pockets with cash. In reality, they don't give a dam about anybody but themselves , black or white.

Don't see how it was a stupid remark. You spoke what was on you mind regardless of feelings for other posters. I like that. I might not agree with what you say. But by speaking what's on you mind & not being wishy whasy on the subject, you have shown your true colors, and I respect that. von

Thank God you haven't picked me yet. I am not quite ripe for picking. Yea, R-14 had posts that were fun. Another person I miss posting on these boards is a guy with a first name of Gary, aka Bedspread. He was one of the top posters over on the old trucknet.com. I am going back 20 years, but him, Paul Taylor aka Opie the lawyer, & Mike the Federal DOT inspector out of Chicago who moderated the safety forums were funny & informative posters. For about 5 years some of the best trucking information to be found on the net. von.
