Deregulation of the trucking industry in the form of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 caused increased competition in the Less than a TruckLoad (LTL) industry. Non-union carriers quickly began taking advantage of their lower labor costs to gain market share. Most of the companies above were union carriers who were unable to compete, though a few were non-union carriers. The trend seems destined to continue until the LTL market is entirely composed of low cost non-union carriers.
 
I have absolutely no reason to dispute your claim. Relative was a 37 year union driver(big R) and has mentioned similar scenario's as you have. If it keeps going, there might be one union carrier(ups/overnight) and the rest will operate like the X (non-union).

Makes you wonder if some people are getting paid big buck with crazy perks to fail... :shades:

I think alot of trucking industries are being ran by computer geeks who have no knowledge of the industry whatsoever.If the computer prints out something that will supposedly work,it is put into action without approval of the people knowledgeable in logistics.

Human knowledge and experience should work hand in hand with the tech geek.Just because it looks good on paper doesn't mean its the best way of doing things.Human input is required.

Associated got bought out/absorbed by the original (union/Teamster) Eastern Freightways which also bit the dust a short time later. (Forgot the exact year). Eastern has been reincarnated but it's not the old Eastern for sure.

A manager came in and held meeting at my husband's job. Said they were going to do something that would bring in good money!! After blowing his smoke, my husband told him flat out it wouldn't work.

"heated discussion" then..... Management said IT WORKS ON PAPER. and besides I have 15 years in trucking.

My husband said I have over 25 years in trucking and I'm telling you, it won't work.

Management left, plan was put into place and...........FAILED!

Wonder what they did with the paper? recycled into toliet paper?? :hysterical:
 
What year did Mistletoe Express go down the drain? It had to be in the 80's I believe. Brown bought their road rights?

My husband worked for American Freightways right before they bit the dust. And where did Big State go?

Been driving 28 years, remember most of them. I ran the east coast for my first 9 years. I see a lot of old east coast companies on the list. Along with
my favorite, CF. The 10 best years of my life were there.

Companies fail every year in other businesses, and other than the people affected, no one cares. As my wife told me the morning PTC closed: "Good thing it happened in the morning-- gives you the rest of the day to find another just as good" (And I did-- three job offers later that same day-- started at Yellow full-time the next morning.) 22 years ago, my own company failed-- no one came rushing to me to "bail me out." I had to go "do something about it." Life's tough. Make the most of it!

We're here. Yellow is our career. All we can really do is ride this horse the best we can, and make sure we've done our best. What happens, happens......

Keep your resume up to date. Keep a current list of possible other places to go. And work like there's no tomorrow! I've seen many guys sit back and think they're owed a job. Those guys have no options when places go down. They're the ones that always complain the loudest.

Personally, I think Yellow's gonna be fine....and there's not much I can do about it anyway, other than show up and work. What I get tired of is hearing all those that cuss every load like they've never had a good load, or no one else has ever had a bad one.....I told one guy if he had to retire and stay home where his wife won't let him complain, he'd explode!

no one is safe...union/non union

but, without a "strong union" I stress "strong union" (because this is what we need and so many laborers' are falling for the idea that they can do as well without a union (period). Make no mistake, the threat of a union is what keeps non union companies offering good wages and benefits...Most are just dollars below thier union competition because of this. You need to be scared,,,really scared,,, at the prospect of "No Unions" Management (along with employees) make or break companies...but the employees don't make the decisions that keep or don't keep a company going,,,management does.:smilie_132:

You have very good advice...I hope you get the return that you have worked for all your life and I hope everyone who has worked like you gets theirs too. I agree with you about Yellow. We have some very good management (mostly). And some very darned good Professional Drivers.:1036316054:
