FedEx Freight | Full Time Dock Laid off......

Franklin, the last line; please explain? Do you feel full time dockworkers are more valuable to the company than cdl holders?

ST:Flame-On:

Are CDL holders more valuable? Why pay a CDL holder to work the dock when you can pay the dock worker less to do a better job of loading anyway. Sorry if this :flame:'s you, but this is my opinion.

What about dock workers who couldnt get there cdl because of a medical condition? That was the case with most of the dock workers that were let go in cci. If they could get there cdl they would have.

Hate to say this but it's called flexability, cdl can work dock, city, and or road. Its the same where everywhere last company i worked for was the same way. I feel bad for all ftd workers who lost their job i'm sure had a lot more senority then me and most of you. But flexability is the way corporate america is. Hope everybody can find something to get by untill economy picks up. Fingers crossed

Taking no sides here but, if there is a medical condition that hinders you from a CDL, that really isnt the companies fault. Either it can be treated with meds or you are eliminated from obtaining it. Those are Federal regs. I am on BP meds myself. Treated and still driving. But if I didnt pass the physical, I couldnt blame the co. :smilie_132:

i wasnt blaming the company. i was responding to the the person who stated that dock workers were told to get there cdls weeks ago. I was making the point that they couldnt do to a medical condition.

We lost full-time dock 12 years ago. No offense to anybody, but it's the easiest position to replace. We have had supplimentals for awhile. Morning dock or night dock. No split shifts. Less than 30 to make sure they don't qualify for benifits. They go through alot of them, but as long as the corporate types don't have to live with in their means, I guess it's justified.

We are getting ready to open up a new center here in a couple of months so they had just hired 10 full-time dock and 10 ddc over the summer. Three of those got cut and 1 of the ddc guys got it.

:duh: Many years ago before Fedex came along the dock workers at American Freightways were told they needed to get their CDL's. They would not come right out and say you were going to lose your job but that is what they were implying. I for one wanted my CDL so I could get off the dock. When I first started at American Freightways the road drivers did not work the dock. That was the goal that I set for myself, so I would not have to work the dock. Well, as you can see that didn't come about. I have been with the company for over 15yrs and I am still working the dock sort of. Someone made the comment in an earlier post about non cdl holders doing a better job of loading trailers than cdl holders. Let me turn the cheek so you can slap it as well. I spent over 3 1/2yrs on the dock before I got my CDL thank you very much. Granted we don't load and unload trailers as much as the dock people do but that isn't all of our job now is it? What it boils down to is this, if you have a CDL you are more valuable to company as an asset. Its called utilizing your manpower at its max. I see before to long that all drivers will have to work the dock on short runs because all the long runs will be run by long haul truckers. If you don't believe me go to Memphis on any given night and see how many shiny wheels are on the yard. The time is coming when it will be not when you work the dock but how much you work the dock.

All FT dock were told they were laid off today and were escorted to the gate by security officers from Fedex Corp. here in CCI.

Sorry to hear this. We lost some really good guys today.

Why were they escorted by security ? Were they criminals or was it a precaution ? I hope they were thanked for their hard work .

It may be the easiest position to replace but the road drivers I work with on the dock don't want to be on the dock. Most of them are not great at loading freight, and some don't care to learn because they just want to drive. Popasmurf, the road guys I work with, some quit former jobs because FedEx told them how great it would be and no working the dock. Most of the ones I work with have never loaded a trailer and have told me they would rather us do it since we do it all the time so it would be done better. If you don't believe that, visit my terminal any given night and see how bad most of them really are. We have one that only cares about the freight for his line and he loads it like crap. My opinion is if you hire part timers and have to keep replacing them, you never get any quality people to load freight. Therefore, you have a lot of misloads, damages, etc., etc., and wasted time training new people all the time. Let's say you get a guy with years of experience, this guy probably has a family and needs a full time job with benefits. Another reason you won't get too many part time quality people. In my opinion, it's better for business to have 1 full dock who are experienced and give a crap about their job as compared to 3 part timers who don't.

I think they are afraid you'll run ramped through dock and take what you can since they just screwed you with no notice. We have some at my terminal that I'm sure they're afraid to "lay off".

I think its more policy than anything. It wasnt a bad as it seems. our ACCM was in tears along with our operation manager who had to walk them out. It was painful for everyone.
