MCHENRY COUNTY -- Daniel J. Smith, 17, of Marengo, who was driving an all-terrain vehicle on a road in Union died early Friday morning in a head-on collision with a semi-truck, police said.
Capt. Glenn Olson of McHenry County sheriff's police said Smith died instantly.
Smith's four-wheel ATV was southbound on South Union Road when it swerved suddenly into the path of a northbound semi. Olson said it is illegal to drive an ATV on the roadway and it is not known why Smith was there.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, Olson said, toxicology tests are pending.
