Hello, new driver here. Graduated my companies 7 week driver training program September 8th and will hit the road alone the 25th running line haul for an ltl company in jersey. I keep being told I need a gps for cdl operators. Anyone have experience with a specific brand, what to look for. I've been eyeballing a garmin 0700. Also, can anyone explain via terminology? 1 and 1,drop one take one, 2 sbd 2. I'm unclear and the guys at the fac are so busy they don't explain effectively yet. Hope everyone's keeping safe out there, look forward to reading comments and advice.

As I understand it- via is when you’re going on your normal run from Point A to Point B, and they divert you thru either another terminal , a Delivery/Pickup, or, (more likely) swapping trailers at a Rail Yard -on the way to Point B. Example: YRC Drivers coming back to their Chicago Terminal from either Akron, Indpls, or even St Paul often were dispatched via one of the Chicago Rail Yards to drop off or pick up a trailer on their way home. Via is an additional stop.

I use an otr700 garmin, it's syncs with your phone to get data for traffic info
That's the exact unit I ordered yesterday! Stoked to get it. I imagine it'll gimme some peace of mind knowing I won't have to back a set of doubles out of somewhere I don't belong 😝

one little piece of advice. I have been in LTL since the mid 80's and the only times I ever screwed up is when I got in a hurry
Thanks for reenforcing that. I keep hearing it but still find my self trying to get out of everyone's way in the yard knowing I need another pull up or another glance at my 5th wheel. I'm gonna make myself slow down and focus every time.

Well you can't trust them 100%. I've never had to break down a set in the road. If you don't want to do that. If you don't have to, of course

Do not let anyone rush you , check , dbl check and check it all again.
Trust your eyes and ears as well as what you have been taught or
been advised as Jeff said my friend. Never get yourself in a spot that
you have to try to back a set up in. Even if a low bridge says 13.6 it
will or can touch , IE just look at the bridges in Chicago. Remember
you are 13.6 but you might be higher empty and I have seen guys
peel one back for being a reckless cowboy. Slow it down , look , listen
use what God gave you driver. All it takes is going too fast under a
low bridge and a bounce , CHARGEABLE , ticket , piles of paperwork.

Safe travels , pay close attention at all times.

Here's a quick story Jeff shared with me once when we were talking.
He has a friend that's a power lineman he says to Jeff that being a
driver is more dangerous than working with high tension power lines
in his job because if he dies it's because he made a mistake and not
another that caused it. Again drivers looking at phones , running reds ,
floating in your lane , tires coming off in another direction and bouncing
through your windshield , road ragers , ect. Seen it all , just be safe , look
ahead , think , think , think !

Here ya go , as said and posted by one of our good members Jaloc.

And if you ever get out of Jersey, and find yourself on I - 294 , in Illinois, set your GPS to alert you to mirror debris ahead.
