Hello fellow driver's. I am about to start at the Annapolis Juntion Barn as a road driver. They told me something about some sort of 3 day training up in Harrisburg, if someone could give some I sight please on what type of training that will be. And alsoon the extra board, do the road driver's have assigned units or just slip seat into whatever is available. Again thanks for any insight and I'm so excited about coming onboard.

Welcome onboard (both to FXF and TB), glad to see you here. Sorry but I am not a road driver so I don't know too much about the initial training but I am sure you will do I a couple of initial runs with a seasoned guy in addition to the class room training.

As to the tractors, units are assigned to a run not a driver. Usually it's lowest mileage unit goes to the longest run. As the extra board you will be covering vacations, open bids, overflow freight, etc so there is no telling what tractor you drive. Might be a brand new 2014 one day and a spare dog the other ...

Again, welcome to the Company, it's a good gig and please do not hesitate to ask any questions you have.

Thanks for the 411! Right now I'm running over the road and I'm just glad to find a good local gig. They told me that initially I will be on the extra-board running wherever needed but they do allow driver's to bid on runs which is going to be a new experience for me. And it seems that invest a lot into their equipment. They have some of the best trucks and trailers in ltl. I'm super excited.

They will cover saftey and logbooks. That sort of thing. Nothing big, just boring

I appreciate that. It sounds like a orientation type of deal. Once I get the official start date lined up, the manager told me to be ready to do a lot of Cbe training. I'm just glad to be a part of the team

Your Computer Based Education will include a lot of education on loading and unloading trailers and scanning bills on and off of trailers.
Did they tell you that you might spend a lot of time on a forklift?
Get yourself an industrial size container of disinfecting wipes as our slip seat tractors are nasty.
At my yard extra board drivers do have their own tractor.
Did they tell you that you will be on a hog board and what that means?

Yeah he did mention some dock-work from time to time but I'm guessing that depends on your run right? I appreciate the heads up about the hog board. This is something they did not mention. If you could explain that plz

Hog board as opposed to a first in first out wheel. On a wheel when you come in from a run you go to the bottom of the wheel and work your way up. Everyone gets an equal amount of work.
The hog board takes care of seniority. The most senior extra board driver is the first one called every day, the most junior is the last.
If you are number 8 and they only use 7 today, they start with number 1 again tomorrow. They have two call blocks which is when they can call you and you have to be available for work. One is 5AM to 9AM the other is 5PM to 9PM. If a run pops up outside those hours, they don't have to call you and can give the run to their favorite local driver, UNLESS you have signed a call block waiver which means they have to call you for a run that pops up outside the call block window.

I would strongly suggest you sign the waiver.
I would strongly suggest you sign up for weekend work every week.
It's our busy time right now and our bottom guy is working 2 to 3 days a week right now.

Don't look down your nose at dock work, it might be all you can get.

And welcome to our happy family.

Thanks for all the info. Working the dock is fine with me, it's better then being stuck out here in liberal Kansas waiting 2 and a half days for a 300 mile load lol it's almost a joke being otr anymore. It seems like FedEx cares about there drivers enough to pay them well and ensure that there's atleast something to do, even if only for a few hours. I understand that being the low dog on the totem pole will suck for a while but after putting some time in hopefully a good bid will open up. I have to tell you I'm impressed with their equipment. They roadtested me in a t680 and what a smooth truck.

The training is mainly about company policy and procedures. Try to stay awake!!!

Also try to pay close attention to these rule and procedures. While they often change with little or no notice, it's still a good idea to know them. Your knowledge (or lack thereof) on them can nip some issues in the bud, or cost you $ on others. Welcome!

Also, pay no attention to the various companies' OTR trucks you'll see on our yards... They're only here on occasion to help out based on freight levels, and in times of "dire need", or just to run that economy freight we occasionally have. :Poke:

I do not know your family situation...but if you have any members who will need to see specialists..,like ENT's, Gastro, Allergy or.immune specialists, Cardio's, etc...make sure you enroll in the FSA account for the max. $2500. Fedex does not have negotiated rates for these types of doctors, so if you get a sinus infection and need to see a ENT it can cost you up to $175 not including any tests you may need. The HRA account is supposed to be used before the FSA, but you will be hard pressed to find any Doctors office who submits for payment after being seen. Basically you will end up paying twice and have to do all the leg work, follow ups to get reimbursed for paying double. Also, always carry Express scripts allowed prescriptions to show your doctor. You will hardly ever be able to fill a prescription the first time if Express srcipts thinks you should try something else first. It can take up to 2-3 weeks to get a prescription filled for kids.Expect to pay out of pocket for non approved prescriptions. And remember, any prescriptions not pre authorized will not count toward the new out of pocket max they will have starting Jan 1st. Good luck!!
