Been seeing a lot of new Freightliners up on I-10 heading East lately.
Hecto in Mexico.

I always find this funny! A single axle and a tandem is the same thing in P&D!! The problem is the driver behind the wheel……..Are you talking new trucks in general? Or new trucks for us?
We've gotten a few new liners, all tandems, so i don't know how tandems are going to play out in city P+D work?
Well, i guess if the fifth wheel can slide back far enough, then i guess it will work........?I always find this funny! A single axle and a tandem is the same thing in P&D!! The problem is the driver behind the wheel……..
I would disagree. In tighter, more urban like environments a single axle tractor is much easier to maneuver than a tandem.I always find this funny! A single axle and a tandem is the same thing in P&D!! The problem is the driver behind the wheel……..
What the hell would possess somebody to think a longer wheelbase makes a truck more maneuverable?I would disagree. In tighter, more urban like environments a single axle tractor is much easier to maneuver than a tandem.
They used too, P&D had the little International 4900's and Line had the 9100-9200.Well they're not going to purchase separate tractors for city and road. The reason for the tandems is weight.
We had a few when I was in Pottstown. DT-466 IH motor, and a straight 5 speed. they were pathetic on a hill. They used too, P&D had the little International 4900's and Line had the 9100-9200.
Well all I’m saying is that both trucks can do the same delivery or pick up.. now if we were talking about trailers.. 28 vs 48 vs 53 then that’s more of a conversation…What the hell would possess somebody to think a longer wheelbase makes a truck more maneuverable?
Just because something is "possible" doesn't mean it's "practical", just saying.Well all I’m saying is that both trucks can do the same delivery or pick up.. now if we were talking about trailers.. 28 vs 48 vs 53 then that’s more of a conversation…
at the end of the day, clearly a single axle is easier but it can be done with either truck no question about it. Problem is that there’s drivers out there that get scared of that extra set of tires.. hell there’s guys that can’t even blindside

Long time back before I ran road I thought it was "cool" to use a tandem road tractor for P&D. Smartened up pretty quickly about that.Anybody who has a choice, and choses a tandem over a single axle for the city is an idiot, unless necessary for weight reasons..
I peddled with a beast like this more than once.
Also had mostly fixed tandem trailers...
Always managed to get it where it had to be....
You guys are old, I live on pilings.Just climbing up and down from the cab all day is a days work.
