AN OPEN LETTER TO GENERAL PRESIDENT HOFFA FROM SEAN O'BRIEN AND FRED ZUCKERMAN
Dear Jim:
You know it and the members know it: this new “last, best and final,” from UPS Freight is another loser contract. The only thing that changed is the negotiators “got back” the things that were given away during the first round of negotiations.

Jim, it doesn’t have to be that way. You have the power of the members. The economy is strong and UPS and its competitors are fighting over employees. Consider these facts released from UPS days before the UPS Freight offer was made available:

· Third quarter revenue is up 8 percent. That’s $17.44
billion.
· Package volume is up
· Profits grew $250 million in the third quarter
· UPS Freight revenue is up 11.4 percent.
· UPS Freight and Supply Chain Division made a profit
$260 million

UPS is making money hand-over-fist. And they’re using that fist to squeeze our members to make even more money.

You had leverage with the members' rejection of the UPS contract that could have been used to the benefit of UPS Freight. You had a 93% strike vote to use as a threat to UPS. Instead, you threaten the members with it. If you’re not willing to take on the company in a booming economy, what should members expect in tougher times?

After 19 years in charge, maybe you’ve lost interest. Maybe you don't have the energy to lead a nationwide strike that would engage all of labor. But Jim, the decision to implement this contract is the most damaging single decision your administration has ever made. You folded a winning hand and dealt a blow to not just the Teamsters but the entire labor movement.

The saddest thing is that we all know that you don't make these decisions anymore. Non-Teamsters like Todd Thompson and Christy Bailey are pulling your strings and deciding the future for Teamsters at UPS. But remember that the 20 percent of Teamsters that voted in 2016 elected YOU president. YOU have the responsibility. When your administration is over, no one will know who Thompson and Bailey were. It’s YOUR name that will forever be attached to this giveaway at UPS. It will be YOUR legacy.

The toughest task of a leader is to realize when they’ve made an error and then fix it. We implore you to stand up and salvage this mess you’ve created. Make your priorities the members' priority. STOP taking the path of least resistance. Stand up and fight. That’s what the members want. That's what they voted for.
