Boeing Patents Design for Intermodal Container Plane

A design with a lot of potential, but it depends on a lot of things going right.

What I find ridiculous is that nobody who uses intermodal is in a hurry. Either this design defeats that by offering expedient intermodal service, or is itself defeated by the cost/benefit ratio not being in its favor.

Only time will tell.

Agree... My question would be on the issue of weight. How much weight per unit can the thing lift? The 18 containers shown seems unrealistic, but I'm not well versed in limits associated with aircraft.

Following major winter storm, several states issue hours waivers

"North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia have issued temporary and limited hours-of-service [and some weight restriction] exemptions for certain relief load haulers in the wake of the historic winter storm that impacted about a third of the U.S. population."

That all depends on how much fuel is on board. Every plane has a maximum take off weight, and heavy loads mean less fuel. Less fuel over longer distances means repeated stops.

At what point does it become not worth the cost? Every fuel stop is a time delay, and as we all know time is money in this business. Nobody is gonna want to use a service if it's always tied up at other airports along the way.

My question would be, do the contains provide structural integrity? would you have to have containers at all times?

Canadian Freight Index Falls 36% Year-Over-Year in December

"Load board operator TransCore Link Logistics said its freight index for Canadian and cross-border loads declined 36% in December compared with a year earlier. However, a dip in equipment volumes led to tightening of the truck-to-load ratio."

Canadian Flyer? Any effect on you, or are you staying north of the boarder these days?

Watching the wheels: active tire pressure systems coming to drive axles

"To date, ATIS technology has been confined to trailers since the hoses are routed through the center of the axles and mounted on the wheel hub to supply air to tires. Using ATIS for drive tires is an elusive goal. Differentials, gear axles and extreme temperatures all stand in the way of routing pressurized air"

FedEx Tax-Break Deal Wins Final Approval From Board in Collierville, Tenn.

The vote also illustrates that in such tax-break matters, companies frequently hold most of the power because governments fear that if they don't provide the financial support the company wants, another community will. Worley publicly pointed toward the example of General Electric, which this month announced it was moving its headquarters from Fairfield, Connecticut, to Boston. "We need to keep FedEx and ... if we don't vote this in today, I'd be willing to bet there will be a hundred phone calls calling FedEx, 'Bring your headquarters to us. We'll take care of you.' "

"...FedEx wrote in its application for tax breaks that it employs 2,425 professional workers with an average salary of $95,000 and 75 clerical workers with an average salary of $45,000. An additional 400 contractors work at the site at a salary described by the company as "unknown.""

Speaking on the matter, "FedEx understands how to leverage supply and demand", said SwampRatt... :smilie93c peelout:

I'm staying North of the border these days, but there's definitely been a shift in freight. Fewer truckloads going around, and carriers are struggling to find drivers willing to cross the border. We can make more miles in a day up here, so they're starting to have to offer incentive rates for US-bound lanes.

Most of the LTL I'm pulling these days is time critical and frequently temperature sensitive. Usually two or three pros on my trailer bound for R+L though, so it hasn't all dried up. Still seeing plenty of YRC Reimer too, though not as many Con-way/XPO. LTL seems to be okay, even among interline carriers.

It's notable, though, that an east coast carrier like Day & Ross is having a hard time bringing freight west from the coast. Western lanes are doing fine. Not really sure what that's about. But I do know we're still looking for single drivers to run US lanes.

Could just be reluctance to cross the border. Our dollar is only worth about $0.75 there, maybe less. And a lot of Canadian truckloads run to Texas or California, which is a long way to go with the exchange rate what it is.

Bison, by all regards, is pretty good to their drivers. Their lanes run at unusual times, though. I might be there if not for the fact that they expect weekends.

Challenger has an excellent driver facility in Cambridge, and all their equipment is new, but their rates are awful compared to even Schneider National.

Erb is a good carrier. Runs mostly reefer loads with some time critical expedite. They don't list what they pay, though, and I've heard their linehaul drivers bump a lot of docks in the US.

Kriska is another one I almost went to work for, but they do mostly crossborder stuff and their rates don't reflect the impact it has.
