"Once enacted, drivers of class 8 trucks will pay a maximum of $20 to travel through the state along Interstate 95 one-way. Each electronic toll gantry a trucker passes under would cost about $3. The maximum daily charge would be $40."

The so-called truck toll bill will help to fund repairs for the state's declining roads and bridges by putting up 14 gantries to toll semi-trucks throughout Rhode Island. Once up and running those tolls are expected to bring in around $45 million a year.
Wow!! $40 to drive through a state the size of most major cities....now that's highway robbery!!!

This, right here, is everything wrong with Washington summed up nicely. They write up these enormous bills with thousands of pages to them, then vote on them without actually reading them.

Could you imagine the board of directors at a major corporation doing that? Voting how to spend money without actually looking? A company like FedEx would go bankrupt in weeks if they made decisions that way.

Amazon-FedEx: Crazy or Worth Considering?

Amazon wouldn't buy FedEx because they're even sleazier than FedEx is. They want to build an entire network based on the under-fire FedEx Ground model because they want to do it cheaper than FedEx.

I've read horror stories from the contractors they've already signed with, and the driver turnover is insane because of the stress Amazon puts on them. If FedEx can't stop the lawsuits, what makes Amazon think they can use the exact same model and pay the contractors even less while expecting even more?

The cost of entry seems high on this scale, and the margins are relatively low, due to the competitive nature of the industry. They are, in fact, seeking extra capacity, and control thereof, but nowhere near this scale. They would be better off getting into pharmaceuticals, cosmetics or something other than transportation, IMHO. An interesting intellectual exercise, nothing more.

Being a freight forwarder now will help lower some of their margins. Either way they are moving to get a portion of the market.

Most likely, I think, they'll attempt to move the bulk of their product to semi-regional points. Then contract out via USPS, Uber style, or contractor model, the last mile (or last 100 miles), to destination. They'll never cover every address in every zip code themselves, IMHO. Much too costly.
