New York Seeks More Than $800 Million From UPS Over Cigarettes

"The UPS suit is similar to a 2014 case brought by Schneiderman accusing FedEx of shipping illegal cigarettes to New York."

"Lawsuits over illegal products being shipped around the United States have had mixed success. In June, federal charges that FedEx intentionally shipped illegal online prescriptions were thrown out at the request of prosecutors, ending a trial that had been underway and scrapping conspiracy and money laundering counts that carried as much as $1.6 billion in fines.

UPS had taken a different track in that case, agreeing in 2013 to forfeit $40 million in payments from illicit online pharmacies under an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department. The company wasn’t prosecuted in that case."

RALEIGH, North Carolina — FedEx Freight technician Eric Vos earned the title of Grand Champion of TMC SuperTech for the second consecutive year in the competition, which was swept by FedEx Freight.

"George Arrants, contest chairman, said last year that Vos won without winning any stations. “Obviously, he upped his game,” Arrants said. “He won a lot of work stations this year, so that tells me he is a true professional and is committed to his craft.”

Vos won eight station competitions during Sept. 20-21, including wheel end No. 2, fifth wheel, preventive maintenance inspection, steering and suspension, and starting and charging."

"FedEx Freight’s Mark McLean Jr. and Stephen Weaver finished second and third overall, respectively."

Eaton AMT software update automates truck docking

"Retrofitable to existing Eaton automated mechanical transmissions (AMTs) as a software update to the control module, Dock Assist automatically navigates the final few feet backing into a loading platform when activated by the driver via a switch. It requires no additional sensors, instead detecting the dock when torque increases as the vehicle touches the platform, according to Larry Bennett, chief engineer for the vehicle group. The system, which is currently being demonstrated with Eaton’s Procision medium-duty AMT, works with or without a trailer.

Development is also underway to extend automated docking to full maneuvering in a terminal and into an assigned dock without any driver intervention. Already in the prototype stage, this technology would allow a driver to leave their vehicle in a terminal where it would autonomously self-park, according to Bennett."

So let me get this straight. Eaton has a switch to accomplish the same thing the I-Shift and DT12 can do natively?

Uber to Move Freight, Target Trucking for the Long Haul

"Uber — the dominant ride-hailing firm and the world's most valuable venture-backed startup, at $68 billion — bought Otto in August in a $680 million deal. Otto, with about 100 employees, had just launched in January.

While Uber's brand and financial backing could supercharge Otto's prospects, industry experts remain skeptical that a Silicon Valley startup with little experience can shake up longhaul trucking.

"The transportation industry is a relationship-backed business," said Kevin Abbott, a vice president at C.H. Robinson. "There's a lot more to it than just finding a piece of equipment.""

Two-Truck Platoons Increasingly Realistic, NACFE Says

Read more at: http://www.ttnews.com/articles/base...k-Platoons-Increasingly-Realistic-NACFE-Says-

The thing I don't get about this idea is that there still has to be a driver in the second truck, and it's still two trucks burning fuel. And in the event that the second truck does go wrong, the second driver has to notice and back off before the lead truck has to brake.

Say what you want to about the dangers of long combination vehicles like turnpike doubles, you can't really deny that all they're doing here is creating one with a virtual tow bar and a driver sitting on the dolly. I'd rather have manual control of the whole vehicle if it's going to be over a hundred feet long, thank you.
