Why Do Employees Quit Their Managers?

https://www-inc-com.cdn.ampproject....l&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

"Hard Fact: Employees Come Before Customers

And therein lies the problem for managers still operating in traditional hierarchies, which represents the majority to this day. They have it all backwards.

Blanchard is famous for teaching the concept of an "upside down pyramid," where leaders serve the employees, who are closest to the customer experience, first. He says:

Great leaders realize that their No. 1 customer is their people. If they take care of their people, train them, and empower them, those people will become fully engaged and gung-ho about what they do. In turn, they will reach out and take care of their second most important customer—the people who buy their products or services—and turn them into raving fans."

Washington Enacts Statewide Paid Family and Medical Leave Law

https://www.natlawreview.com/articl...7-17-17&utm_source=Robly.com&utm_medium=email

"Workers will become eligible for leave under the law after 820 hours of employment. For purposes of the law, “family members” include an employee’s spouse, child, parent, sibling, grandparent or grandchild.

If an employee has a need for both medical and family care leave during the same 52-week period, the employee’s total leave allotment will be capped at 16 weeks. Additionally, female employees who experience complications relating to pregnancy will be eligible to receive two additional weeks of leave, for a possible 18 weeks total per year."

Shortsighted nonsense like this will increase the "cost to employ", while adding little or nothing to typical workers' bottom line. A heavy burden for an employer and seems ripe for abuse...

Ohio House Passes Bill Weakening Employers’ Ability to Restrict Guns on Property

https://www.natlawreview.com/articl...7-17-17&utm_source=Robly.com&utm_medium=email

"The newest bill, which passed out of the Ohio House on July 6, would eliminate criminal penalties for carrying a deadly weapon into a business that restricts them."

"Employers could still take disciplinary action against such an employee, but they would not be backed by the threat of criminal prosecution."

The Driver Shortage Is More Acute, Some Truckers Say

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/driver-shortage-more-acute-some-truckers-say

"In 2010, there were 7.5 unemployed people for every job opening. Today there are less than 1.5 for every job opening.

“This is for the entire economy,” said Bob Costello, chief economist at American Trucking Associations. “Other industries are talking about labor shortages. That is going to make it more difficult for trucking companies to recruit new people into this industry. That is going to be tough,” Costello said.

Less-than-truckload carrier A. Duie Pyle Inc. has felt over the years the strain to recruit drivers, said Chief Operating Officer Randy Swart.

“But this year, we have actually felt the strain on driver recruiting more than any other year,” he added. “Over the last three months, there has been a noticeable change in the availability of qualified CDL drivers available to the industry.”"

Unfortunately, this program has been abused by many for quite some time and it's "unfair" (I hate that word) to those who really need it.

The same can arguably be said about any welfare assistance program. There's always going to be people who abuse them. And the people who need them always suffer for it.

We have FMLA in Ohio you have to work 1200 hrs in the year BUT we don't get any pay for those days you use it,it's just counted against your time or days and excused. And Red I agree let's use the word "unjust"

But still, some in management treat us like drivers are a dime a dozen.
But that's ok, when the drivers retire and all that is left is steering wheel holders, we will see who gets the last snicker.

The same can arguably be said about any welfare assistance program. There's always going to be people who abuse them. And the people who need them always suffer for it.
Hence the problem with the shift to Government administration of assistance programs vs Charitable organizations. Local charities tend to know better who is a slacker and who is truly "in need".

Sadly, that horse as already left the barn...

Maps, sensors and algorithms: understanding what drives an autonomous vehicle

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/maps-sensors-algorithms-understanding-what-drives-autonomous-dans

"It is important to understand that an autonomous vehicle does not depend exclusively on satellite maps for navigation. Satellite maps are a fundamental aspect of choosing a route and the ability to deal with variables such as traffic, but are not the deciding factor for the navigation itself, or decisions such as braking, accelerating or turning. These types of decisions are mainly made based on the real-time reading by the vehicle’s sensors, cameras, radars and LiDAR which provide dynamic environment control, 360º view, blind spot detection, parking assistance, lane discipline, traffic warnings at crossings, traffic light recognition, emergency braking, obstacle detection or adaptive speed control..."

The fading American dream? Maybe companies deserve more of the blame.

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/fadi...VjIz3uQ&fromEmail=fromEmail&ut=2x_QpIiAJnFTQ1

"In reporting across the country for LinkedIn's new "Work in Progress" series, people tell me that they feel anxious. In grocery stores, gas stations, doctor's offices and corporate headquarters, the conversations drift to a familiar place: that the American dream, while certainly not dead, feels harder to grasp.

The factors fueling this sentiment are complex, from globalization to automation and inequality. A smart new book, though, adds another dimension to the discussion, focusing on companies and the erosion of their relationships with workers."

Interesting historical perspective, if you can get past the term "inequality', as well as Government involvement in "minimum wages vs living wages".

Norway Takes Lead in Race to Build Autonomous Cargo Ships

https://www.wsj.com/articles/norway-takes-lead-in-race-to-build-autonomous-cargo-ships-1500721202

"In addition to reducing fuel and labor costs, the Birkeland project is being pitched as a way to cut emissions. The ship is expected to replace 40,000 truck drives a year through urban areas in southern Norway, the companies say.

Ship operators increasingly are being asked to introduce cleaner fuels when sailing close to populated coastal areas, especially in the U.S. and Europe."

"“Once the regulation is in place, I can see this spreading fast,” Mr. Haoy said. “There is a lot of interest from operators of coastal tankers, fish-transport vessels and supply ships that are knocking on our door.”"

New distracted driving law in Washington makes it illegal to hold phone while driving

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...s-illegal-hold-phone-while-driving/504821001/

"The Washington State law makes it illegal for a driver to hold an electronic device in even when stopped at an intersection or in traffic, which closes loopholes in other state laws. Fines start at $136 for the first offense and $234 for the second, and will be reported to the driver’s insurance company and will appear on the driver’s record."

"Other provisions in the Washington law bar eating, putting on make-up and shaving, which can cause a car to drift across lanes in traffic. These secondary offenses carry $99 fines, which may still not be enough to deter some motorists."

Speed limiter mandate, sleep apnea stripped from Trump DOT agenda

http://www.ccjdigital.com/speed-limiter-mandate-stripped-from-trump-dot-agenda/

"Given the erosion of industry support for a speed limiter rule over the past year and the Trump administration’s reluctance to implement new regulations, industry stakeholders assumed the Trump DOT would drop or stall the speed limiter rulemaking.

Thursday’s update to the DOT calendar confirmed those expectations.

The DOT report also marked the ongoing sleep apnea screening rulemaking as withdrawn "

American Dream
The ideal that every U.S. citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination and prosperity.
The Dream isn't fading, people's priorities are severely skewed. Materialism and the need for toys are what is destroying the American Dream.
Sincerely,
Toyless, debt free and 7 digit retirement nest egg.
