Why do some of the old carolina storage trailers have an "R" next to the emergency glad hand. I have seen this R drawn in grease next to the glad hand on some of the current trailers. I can only assume this was a practice at carolina. But what does it mean?

You are correct. Before Carolina started putting a "R" decal close the glad hand. If a trailer was a roll up, the yard switcher would mark them with a good old greasy "R". Wish I had a dollar for everyone I marked that way. Would not have to worry about my pension cut.
