Sunday 6.8.2008 Local 705 Strike Authorization Vote

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strike Authorization Vote held in Chicago.

Local 705 I.B.T.

Numbers are as follows;

Present,

Holland 97 members

Yellow 86 members

Roadway 68 members

ABF 44 members

Total 295 members signed in to meeting.

Again, Holland members lead the way.

The vote was by ballot.

Booths were set up for those members that elected to record their vote exclusive of anyone else seeing how they voted.
If they so chose.

Many members voted openly in plain view of all.

Vote totals,

281 voted YES, to authorize the Local to call a strike if and when necessary.

15 voted NO, not to authorize a strike.

Yes, I know a difference of (1) one

As soon as a corrected count is provided I will post it.

Many things were said at this meeting.
Opinions on each side of the coin were expressed openly at the microphone, with respect given to all.

NO, THE SKY IS NOT FALLING.

FYI

We are an independent Local and as such do not require the sanction of the International to proceed, if necessary, to its logical conclusion.

I can sum up the overall gist of this meeting by quoting the following statements expressed at the microphone by a long time member;

"Every individual must be willing to sacrifice for the good of the whole".

"Those that came before us got us where we are, it is up to us to protect this job for those that come after us".

"What is done to one of us is done to all of us."

And for those of you curious to know,

I voted YES

In fraternity and solidarity.

This Union is the membership.

The membership has spoken.

Can't believe the international is not going to step in.
How are they going to explane how 1 local managed to get a better stronger contract than the rest of the country.
That is a lot of egg to scrape off the face of Hoffa and his people.

In 1958, Jimmy Hoffa SR spoke at the 705 hall asking for the 705 to surrender their bargaining autonomy (and control of the 705 pension) to the international.
The 705 declined and Hoffa had a hard ** for them ever since. 705 was left out of many things for decades.
Chicago's 705 has always negotiated on their own and generally got what the NMFA outlined plus specific over and above language because this city is the hub of the nation on many fronts. (Rail, Air, Truck)

Are you part of the IBT?

I'm not asking this in a negative way, but aren't you part of the IBT, and if so, cant the International step in and put the Local in Trusteeship or whatever they call it when they take over a Local? I ask this because that is precisely how our Local scared some members into voting yes on the latest contract, basically saying if we vote no, the International could (emphasized as WILL) step in and force us under the master anyway. (which we did get some better language than, for what it's worth).

705 is Independent of, affiliated with.

Being put into trusteeship is a serious endeavor. And is usually having to do with corruption, mis-appropriation of funds.
Stuff like is happening at Local 714 in Berwyn, IL, the H*gans

How will it look to the entire nation.

That one local stood their ground and then was punished (if possible) because they believed in the premise of Democracy, Brotherhood and their right to a fair and equitable agreement, but most of all because they believed in UNIONISM.

I guess Local 705's membership doesn't believe in innuendo.

Teamsters Local 705

If we don't stand up now and stick together for what we believe in then the future of all the locals is at stake because of the members just want to roll over and give in to "Big Freight". We deserve more and if we believe we will recieve but it will be a group effort not that of just one. We are the union and it is only as strong as it's members. We will prevail if we stick together.
