Sunday 6.8.2008 Local 705 Strike Authorization Vote
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strike Authorization Vote held in Chicago.
Local 705 I.B.T.
Numbers are as follows;
Present,
Holland 97 members
Yellow 86 members
Roadway 68 members
ABF 44 members
Total 295 members signed in to meeting.
Again, Holland members lead the way.
The vote was by ballot.
Booths were set up for those members that elected to record their vote exclusive of anyone else seeing how they voted.
If they so chose.
Many members voted openly in plain view of all.
Vote totals,
281 voted YES, to authorize the Local to call a strike if and when necessary.
15 voted NO, not to authorize a strike.
Yes, I know a difference of (1) one
As soon as a corrected count is provided I will post it.
Many things were said at this meeting.
Opinions on each side of the coin were expressed openly at the microphone, with respect given to all.
NO, THE SKY IS NOT FALLING.
FYI
We are an independent Local and as such do not require the sanction of the International to proceed, if necessary, to its logical conclusion.
I can sum up the overall gist of this meeting by quoting the following statements expressed at the microphone by a long time member;
"Every individual must be willing to sacrifice for the good of the whole".
"Those that came before us got us where we are, it is up to us to protect this job for those that come after us".
"What is done to one of us is done to all of us."
And for those of you curious to know,
I voted YES
In fraternity and solidarity.
This Union is the membership.
The membership has spoken.
