Tanker wreck

Charlotte Observer is reporting that the driver went to sleep. Sure am glad that I didnt lay down in Winnsboro, I came up thru there several hours before and almost laid down @ mm 48 but decided that I had enough time to make Troutman NC. Do you know what company the truck belonged to?

"Pope" was on the tanker.

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. -- Wednesday was a day thousands of Interstate drivers won't forget for some time.

A tanker truck hauling 9,000 gallons of gasoline overturned in the median on Interstate 77 northbound in Chester County.

The wreck happened around 5:15 a.m. at about mile marker 69. South Carolina state troopers said 47-year-old John Cooper Jr. fell asleep at the wheel of the tanker, swerved off the right side of the road, and then veered into the median, rolling the loaded tanker.

Fortunately, Cooper wasn't hurt and neither was anyone else.

Troopers shut I-77 down both ways for nearly nine hours. Traffic was diverted at exit 65 heading north toward Charlotte and at exit 73 heading south. Emergency officials were most concerned about a possible fuel spill and danger it could pose to drivers.

Troopers said drivers were complaining about how long it was taking to reopen the road.

"We got quite a few calls about the time it was taking," said Trooper Jeff Gaskin.

It turned out that very little fuel leaked from the overturned tanker, which was on it's way from Charleston to Matthews.

However, it took much of the day for crews to inspect the crash site, and bring in another tanker to offload the fuel without spilling any more of it.

Cooper is charged with driving too fast for conditions, which includes the act of falling asleep at the wheel.

thankfully last night went smooth :TR10driving03:

Anybody know if this is tied into waiving the operating hours of tanker drivers due to fuel shortages in S.E. It would be interesting to get a look at the drivers log book over the past 2 weeks.
