There have been so many cross-over fatal accidents along the stretch between Winnie and Beaumont in the last year, the general public has been screaming that the state needed to do something. They had JUST finished putting in this stretch about 2 weeks ago.
I saw this wreck - it was a mess, but those barriers did keep the vehicles from going over into the east-bound lanes of traffic. The big truck ended up across both lanes of the west-bound side and hard against the cable - it WOULD have slid into the east-bound lanes if that cable hadn't been there.
Of course you always have a segment of the population that is going to disagree about anything different done to a highway and in this case, it's the motorcycle riders. They say the cables are man-killers - what I am about to write is MY opinion, flame me if you want, but if some of those bikers would slow down and stop weaving in and out of traffic, they wouldn't be flying 50-feet through the air into the cables.
The proof is in the stats - the sections of highway in Southeast Texas that have the cable have seen a HUGE decrease in the numbers of cross-over fatal accidents. The cable works.
