UPS Freight's Holmes to retire, McArdle to head LTL carrier

Jack Holmes, the UPS executive who took the wheel of its industrial trucking subsidiary, UPS Freight, in 2007, will retire in June. Rich McArdle, another career UPS executive, will take his place as president of the Richmond, Virginia-based less-than-truckload motor carrier.

UPS Freight is the fifth-largest U.S. LTL trucking company, after Old Dominion Freight Line, YRC Freight, XPO Freight and FedEx Freight. The company had $2.5 billion in revenue in 2015.

Holmes helped the company formerly known as Overnite Transportation expand from its traditional LTL roots into truckload, multimodal and non-asset transportation. He also oversaw the transition of the carrier from a virulently nonunion business to a Teamster company.

A lifelong UPS employee and executive, he bought a perspective forged in the larger transportation business to the LTL carrier founded by J. Harwood Cochrane in 1935. He also befriended Cochrane, now 103 years old, and drew on his long trucking experience.

“LTL is in a unique position,” Holmes said in a 2013 interview. “We’ve got parcel on one side of the business and truckload on the other side. If they want to grow, LTL carriers will have to be more aware and more involved in their customers’ sourcing strategies.”

“Jack's contributions to UPS and the trucking industry are immeasurable,” said Myron Gray, president of U.S. operations for UPS. “His strong leadership, deep industry knowledge and professional counsel have educated and inspired countless UPSers and others.”

Holmes began his UPS career in 1979 as a package handler in Philadelphia. He became a package car driver in 1983 and was promoted into management in 1984. He joined UPS Freight when UPS acquired the company in 2005, and became president in 2007.

McArdle, currently Mid-Atlantic district manager for UPS, started as a part-time employee in 1982, loading package cars in Kentucky. He has held several management positions with UPS, becoming South Carolina district manager in 2007 and working in Washington, D.C.
