Head for the Esenhower Tunnel on I-70. Soon as you get to the bottom of the mountain they will teach you. And then you will know.

Von, in our case it was very simple, we called line dispatch to send some one to chain er up, while we sat on the clock.

And you might have waited days for the chain man to get to you. I had 4 years experience with the Colorado State Patrol working @ Copper. And all 4 of them I was a volunteer on the fire department. Very few fires. But @ least 1 run a day on I-70 or the exit for Copper. Trust me the CHP would not wait that long for your chain gang to arrive. They would have helped you or towed you. Especially on the east side of the climb to the tunnel. Frisco, CO the next exit going east from Copper was the busiest department in Summit County. We did some of our training in Frisco. They had a lot of runs out on I-70. Our fire service area met @ Officers Gulch. An exit that went nowhere back in 1980. Little parking area for the vista & that was it. Now they might have developed that exit for all I know. Just checked the map. Same as 1980. Looks like more pavement than back then. Still goes nowhere except on foot from the parking lot. von.

See...... Thats what you get for driving in all that snow and big mountains, we don't have many summits and passes in SC, Ga and Fla.
I looked out for the companies equipment and didn't wear out our chains, just park and wait for it to melt.
If we blocked the road you just tell the trooper you didn't know how to chain it up and he would do it for you while I sat in my warm truck.
Those HP guys were very nice, if we got moving pretty quick, I might even buy him a coffe.
Another thing, with our pusher axles, had so much traction, we very seldom got stuck.
A SC trooper told me air horns should be outlawed on trucks.
I asked him, why? his wife ran off with a Big R driver, every time he hears an air horn, says he's afraid he's bringing her back.

Are you sure it was the air horn and not the air starter with no muffler on it

Truth be told, if I had to go over that pass today in that type of equipment I would tell them they are nuts. Loaded down with gear & guests with disk/drum brakes scares me today. But hey, when you are 30 ya don't care so much. von.
