Mergers fail in transportation because it's the last gasp of two or more failing companies. Merger is the last and only option and is doomed from the beginning.
When done properly, mergers can be successful. The goal of mergers is to reduce the cost structure of both companies. ABF and Carolina come to mind. The Preston Trucking buyout of Shippers Dispatch was another successful merger.
