Yellow | Home deliveries at night!

We had a PGH combo driver take 2 home deliveries on 5/30 at 10pm. One was about 5 miles away and the other was about 40 miles away from the terminal. He did not get back until 3am. Is there anything in the contract that prevents this from happening or does everyone just do what they want without recourse. I'll be damned if I'm doing home deliveries at night. This sort of behavior is becoming a common theme here at yellow. We might as well just quit paying dues because the union doesn't seem to care as long as the money keeps rolling in.:ranting:

What were the circumstances? Normally at our terminal we try to schedule home deliveries between 8-5 which is regular normal business hours. There has to be extenuating circumstances for a driver to make home deliveries that late and expeciallly one that is 40 miles from the terminal.

PS - Ever run Raphine to Buffalo or vise-versa?? :1036316054:
We can handle a road in the dark but i don't want to be finding a residental address and knocking on doors at midnight. I did RAN to BUF for 2 years. 219 will keep you awake for sure--not much room to screw up-the rumble strips are big tall trees

Never for Yellow. I've run almost all segments though. I used to be on an upstate board hauling steel. Ran all over OH, PA, NJ, NY and ONT at night for AM delivery. If its a truck route in Western PA and it sucks, I've probably run it at night!!! :1036316054:

Then you don't go out! Let's reexamine this. A home delivery after midnight!! Am I wrong or is this a problem? Next thing you know home deliveries at 2am, 3am, 4a, where does it stop?
You are in the freight delivery business. What if that is the time your shift is? What difference does it make if its a home delivery or a delivery into a warehouse? And what does the union have to do with this? You are hired as a delivery driver, Deliver do your job. Be thankful it wasn't in the Hill district. I have had many deliveries there as a driver delivering furniture way after dark. I took out my fair share of telephone and cable lines on some really small streets up in Troy Hill. It was my job and I did it to the best of my ability. But you have no beef here with the union because it is not in the contract that we do not make home deliveries after hours.

A warehouse is lighted and offers enough room to move around a tractor trailer. I mis-stated about the union being the blame, the union itself is not to blame. I am suggesting that this is a dangerous practice (HOME DELIVERIES AFTER DARK) and maybe should be addressed by the unions. You are correct I am a delivery driver, but that does not mean I am going to put my life or my safety on the line because someone wants there TV before 2am. Like I stated before where does it stop? I myself have no problem with night deliveries or pickups at COMMERCIAL establishments. They are usually brightly lit and generally deliver inside where there are people you can see and have a job working there. Homes are not brightly lit and a lot of times do not have numbers, and who is to say the person taking the stuff off your truck doesn't have other things in mind. I've had house numbers that where wrong and houses that didn't even exist on streets before because of typo's. As for Yellow1 anonymity is a wonderful thing. To suggest that I reveal my Identity would be careless and stupid.

So basically you're saying that any delivery/pickup made after dark is unsafe even if it's just 6pm or so in the winter? Are you kidding me? And you really think the Union should do something about this? Give it your best shot but I hardly think this is the big issue you make it out to be. Just my opinion of course.

I never said any delivery. I said HOME deliveries.

We are supposed to do the same bit between 8am and 5pm. The circumstances are generally that the freight came in late and missed the truck or the guy wants his stuff now.

home deliveries

Hi,
Ya know when I was peddling frt I tried to save my home deliveries for later in the day or evening! 1) I can concentrate on comercial delvs and p/ups early. 2) Chances of someone being there to accept the frt increase markedly and I don't have to deal with it tomorrow or give it to cartage and give away the work! 3) Sometimes theres a small amount of lunch money involved by a grateful customer.
We get paid by the hour, wether it's pounding the dance floor or delivering frt. If I'm peddling, I sure as hell don't want to pound the dock.
