I like the part about "a training course for up to 8 weeks at a cost of around $6000" . You don't need a training course, just need to pass the test at the driver's license office.
I wouldn't live in a truck for $38000. That's about 11/hr. on a 60 hour week, and that's being conservative.

$38,000 a year is around $4.35 an hour. Which isn't even minimum wage.
I don't only count drive time. I count all time spent away from home. Because if you ain't home, your working.

So on a normal job we should include drive time to and from work, trips to the grocery, hardware and walmart, weekend outings and any other time not at home, when figuring out our wage? Interesting concept, however flawed it is.
I think he means time spent sleeping in the truck. Even though your "off duty", you can't go home.
About 50k per year to start, and get them home every weekend and they might attract and keep some drivers. What they have on the table right now is a joke. It shouldn't be called 'Driving jobs that nobody wants' it should be called 'Driving jobs that companies aren't serious about hiring for'.

You clearly have never lived in a truck.
Sure as hell, I haven't. And I still know better.
Also, those weekend outings in some random hell hole truck stop, aren't quite the same as time spent with friends.
And going to Wal-Mart to restock the mini fridge doesn't feel the same as a trip to fill the freezer and have dinner with the family.
Interesting perspective, however flawed it is.

I guess some people don't understand the difference between a weekend at home and a " weekend " on the road.

I would not! could not !should not ever run OTR !! Bottom line they Just Don't pay enough to live away from home and on the road for months !! ill stay at Con~way at least I'm home every weekend and every nite not such a bad deal when ya think about what you could be doing !!!
The only people these companys will attract is the ones that have blimished licenses ... No hazmat or many tickets on there record . Probably can't pass a background check at a reputable company , so let them slide and offer a small sign on bonus .Then give them a truck and let them be on the way for 38k a year ... That's the ones you see that looks like they haven't had a bath in month !

Nothing worse than being stuck 2000 miles away from home with NOTHING to do all weekend except watch re-re-re-re-runs of NCIS or the same movie for the 34th time om AMC in a smelly truckstop tv lounge.

...and then send them over to the local Con-way terminal to pull our freight across the country and hope they don't dump the trailer or abandon the load somewhere. People you would call the cops on if you saw them in your neighborhood are roaming around our terminals on a daily basis.
I'll have to say last evening was most exciting , returned to the dock and walked into the break room and this cartage driver was smacking on them little weenie & cheese sausages you get from the vending maching , and as I got closer the aroma was overwhelming ... Quite the fragrance was lingering from this guy like rotton sardines . And I kinda took notice but not real close . Soon after he asked one of the other drivers for a toothpick , and my first thoughts were " dude are you for-real ... Just wipe it off...you only got one toof "!! This guy was a fine specimen of a trucking professional.
