Part of the 118 Freeway was closed to traffic the morning of June 16 due to a truck-tractor collision that spilled 150 gallons of diesel fuel.

At 12:17 a.m., Miguel Lopez Vargas, 26, of Oceanside, was driving a 1996 Freightliner threeaxle truck-tractor westbound on the 118 Freeway in the right-hand lane at about 43 mph. The truck was pulling a flatbed trailer with a cargo container loaded with metal car lifts.

For unknown reasons, Vargas allowed the truck to drift onto the right paved shoulder. Vargas then steered to the left across both lanes and hit the guard rail on the center divider shoulder.

The truck traveled about 160 feet along the guard rail before

crossing both lanes to the right shoulder concrete barrier. The vehicle then traveled about 470 feet against the barrier before coming to a stop.

Vargas exited the truck as it caught fire and burned to the ground. About 150 gallons of diesel fuel from the truck's fuel tanks spilled.
