I'm not to old, but I heard the old timers talk about before deregulation you had to have authority to deliver in a state. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct. I started with Overnite Transportation in 1977. Our headquarters were in Richmond Va. We had interstate authority to several states but no intrastate authority in Virginia. If we picked up freight in Virginia, going to somewhere else in Virginia, that freight had to be sent through another state and then back into Virginia to be delivered. After deregulation, no problem.
