Town of Wallkill - A dump truck traveling west on Route 17 toward Middletown slid out of control near Phillipsburg Road this morning, spilling shale across the Quickway and ending up on its side in a ditch off the highway.
The driver from the concrete company E. Tetz and Sons was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and no one else was hurt.
But the accident forced the closure of Route 17 westbound beginning about 11:30 a.m., causing a lengthy backup. Police also closed the eastbound lanes about 1 p.m. in order to pull the truck out of the ditch.
