Truck driver shortage eases this year as freight shipments slow and pool of drivers rises

*Misleading headline? Don't take staffing for granted.

"According to surveys by ATA, the average driver age in the for-hire over-the-road truckload industry is 46 years old. Other trucking sectors have an even higher average age, like less-than-truckload and private carriers.

Over the next decade, Costello estimates the trucking industry will need to hire roughly 1.1 million new drivers, or an average of nearly 110,000 drivers a year. Replacing retiring truck drivers will account for 54% of that hiring, while the growth in the industry will account for another 25% of new driver hires.

I heard the driver told police his name was SwampRat, and that it was just a weekend run for a company from Cedar Rapids?
:biglaugh:

Note that said driver was NOT cited...

"According to Colorado law, on-road vehicles must show a red or amber light for their tail lights that can be seen at least 100 feet away in the sunlight.

A representative of the Longmont Fire, Police and OEM tells Yahoo Lifestyle that the driver was not cited for the poor choice."

In fact, the officer went on to say (though not quoted in the story) : "The driver showed extreme creativity, ingenuity, and the highest degree of professionalism. I would certainly like to have that guy on our team."

During Tesla’s earnings call Wednesday, the Semi was mentioned only once.

“… the story for Tesla in the future is, fundamentally, Model 3 and Model Y,” said Musk. “And then you could throw like a truck in there – pickup truck and a Semi – but [Model S and Model X volume] just gets smaller and smaller. [Model S and Model X] are great products but they’re, from a volume standpoint, they’re not all that important in the long-term.”

UPS Q2 Earnings & Revenues Top Estimates, Rise Y/Y, Stock Up

"Supply Chain and Freight revenues decreased 3.1% to $3,393 million due to trade-related sluggishness. Driven by its focus on revenue quality, the UPS Freight unit registered a 3.9% increase in revenue per LTL (less-than-truckload) hundredweight in the reported quarter. Operating profits in the segment increased 10.5% on an adjusted basis to $273 million in the second quarter aided by prudent cost management actions."

Musk was later overheard after the news conference that further testing and development of their autonomous semi would be now handled by Elmer’s Truck and Tractor Repair, of Calumus, Iowa. That would be good , we got a driver that poops 2X a day on the clock for that 1 hour of overtime.
We could hook it right to his butt and mouth and save us 2 hours a day , the other hour is spent at
the fuel island putting his 10 gallons of fuel in his dedicated city truck. It never needs oil , lmao...

Updated: Senate Bill Touted as ‘Largest Highway Legislation in History’

https://www.truckinginfo.com/337166/senate-bill-touted-as-largest-highway-legislation-in-history

"CAGT pointed out what it sees as two key highlights of the bill:

  • Increases INFRA/ Nationally Significant Freight and Highway Projects Program funding to $5.5 billion over five years (the FAST Act authorized the program at $4.5 billion over five years). Funds available to multimodal projects through this program increases significantly – from a cap of $500 million over five years to a cap of 30% annually, or $1.65 billion. The proposal also calls for transparency measures in the grant decision making process
  • Increases freight formula program funding to $8.5 billion over five years (the FAST Act authorized the program at $6.3 billion over five years) and raises the amount that can be invested annually in multimodal freight infrastructure from a cap of 10% of project funds available to multimodal projects, to a cap of 30%, or $2.55 billion"

Pets Can Help Fleet Recruitment Efforts and Boost Driver Satisfaction

https://www.ttnews.com/articles/pet...uitment-efforts-and-boost-driver-satisfaction

“We went back and forth allowing pets, banning pets, but ultimately back to allowing pets again,” said Michael Fisk, Roadmaster Group’s director of marketing, recruitment and development. “Ultimately, the benefit is stronger recruiting and retention.”

While many fleets welcome drivers’ four-legged friends, they typically limit them to cats and dogs.

“No pygmy goats, no snakes, no parakeets and no monkeys,” said Michael Hinz, senior vice president of sales and operations for Joplin, Mo.-based CFI.
