Profit dips at Con-way as driver pay rises, surcharge revenue drops

Higher costs and lower tonnage outstripped Con-way’s ability to raise rates in the second-quarter, lowering revenue and profit at both of the $5.8 billion company’s trucking subsidiaries.
The reduction in profitability will place more emphasis on ongoing efforts to bring pricing and costs into balance at Con-way Freight, the second-largest U.S. less-than-truckload carrier, especially as other LTL carriers, including Saia and Old Dominion Freight Line, are increasing profits.
