Ok all you experienced drivers out there, I need to pick your brains (insert your own joke about your brain here) on the driving competition. After six years of prodding I'm going to give it a try this year, but I have no idea what class to enter or even what the whole thing involves. All I know is that there are written tests and inspection evaluations and an obstacle course? any info and ideas for me, please and thank you.

Contact your safety manager. He should have all the information. Ask him for the book "Facts for Drivers". It's put out by the American Trucking Association. He should also have a book with the course diagram and obstacles. Also, call your state trucking association. It's a lot of fun. I've been doing it for several years. Went to the nationals, also. Very good time. Good luck. Hope to see you in Houston!

I've done 5 of them now and all I can say is try it. I have a lot of fun and my kids enjoy it also. As far as the class try tankers or bobtails those seem to have less competition. Twins and three axles seem to have the most.

Despite all the negativeness people might be feeling about the company.
This is a great opportunity to strut your stuff, It's exciting to see all the competition show up.
If you don't participate, you should attend a driving competition and watch how exciting it can be. It might just spark interest in competing the next time around.

Once you go you are hooked for life. I can't go this year ripped a mudd flap off the tractor. I was not a happy camper for about 2 weeks. Pick any class your first year just get your feet wet. It's a blast.:funky:

Go! Go! Go!

:hide: Personally, they can stick the Truck Driving Rodeo up their A**.
You and I are proven outstanding drivers, or we would not be here!
This is just one more way for the Company to STRUT their stuff, and claim to be a SAFE company.
My opinion is, DO NOT enter the competion, JUST do your job to the best of your ability each day, and YOU will be a STAR.
This is one more spin on reality, to Con-Ways advantage! :smilie_132:

Hehehehe...now thats the attitude to have...keep your struts to yourself, collect your pay for your hard work and press on. Spend the time at home with your family...let me see, do I put my nifty little truck driving competition next to my Vice Presidential citation for security duties for then Vice President G. Bush, or next to my Presidential Citation for Providing Security and Escort duties for the Supreme Soviet for State Security when they came to Ellsworth...hmm...where do I put such a grand thing...

Sorry I suppose for some people this is really a good thing. I had a well rounded and proud military career so things in which conway can offer do not really mean much to me, for those of you though in which it does, go for the gusto, good luck and like mentioned before, have a good time.

Longtimeltl, I agree 100%. Each and every one of us knows exactly how big of a star we are. Personally I would like to have 100% non-participation in all state TDC's. With the emphasis that corperate puts on TDC, (for their image) it's a great opportunity to show your displeasure with the company. Wouldn't it be great not to hear about Joe Conway winning while your waiting on hold for dispatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly

Why go make the company look good? I dont get it. Maybe it would send a message if nobody showed up. Maybe they would be a little embarrased, maybe a little hurt. You know, how we get sometimes with the company enhancements and all.

I am going, just to observe and watch the so called best of the best of each company.
Yes, you represent the company you work for but ultimately you are doing it for yourself.

Those Con-way participants also lost the pension, sick days and whatever else has been taken away, but they do it just for themselves and see where they stand against other drivers
Con-way didn't hold a gun to their head and force them. They always fill their quota with return and newer participants.

However I see where the other posters are coming from. I see the same rants at my barn.

certificate of appreciation

Thanks for your opinion dude, and thank you for your service to our country. I too am a proud veteran with 5 years of active duty service (Army). I was selected for the detail to provide perimeter security when President Reagan visited Ft.Campbell after we lost the boys from 3/502 in Gander while returning from Operation Bright Star in Egypt. I also was selected to be on funeral detail and buried a few of those boys. I never received any certificates for these actions, but I was proud and honored to do it.
It's not for the recognition nor something to hang on my wall that I now seek to enter the driving championships, but rather to test myself, have fun and make some new friends in the process. I appreciate all the feedback.

Odds are you'll have fun. But the fun is odd.

Conway drops a big dollar on this stuff and you will not feel like you are at the same company. They will treat you and you're family very well.

Never said he was

I just stated that it would be nice to see no one show up for their little truck driving show. That it might send a message that employees are getting fed up with Conways antics. I found out a long time ago people are gonna do what their going to do, and I, or no one else is gonna change their decision. I learned to do whats best for me and not worry so much about what everyone else is doing. They have to live with their decisions, and if it makes them happy, more power to them.

wonderring, you are absolutely right and I did not intend to say he was a kiss----. I understand and applaud his decision to enter the tdc. But, if everyone would not participate, it certainly would send a message

A boycott would definitely send a message, but it could never be pulled off.
