Deregulation of the trucking industry in the form of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 caused increased competition in the Less than a TruckLoad (LTL) industry. Non-union carriers quickly began taking advantage of their lower labor costs to gain market share. Most of the companies above were union carriers who were unable to compete, though a few were non-union carriers. The trend seems destined to continue until the LTL market is entirely composed of low cost non-union carriers.

The unions fault for not organizing any companies and pressuring lawmakers to repeal the law. Keep donating to democrats who destroyed our industry but couldn't give us a bailout like GM Carter started this crap plus when republican Reagan fired Air Traffic Controllers every union should have gone on strike.

Motorways and Interlink were big back in the day. Interlink was the largest LTL in Canada when it collapsed after 3 years of fending for itself without financial support from CP. And they'd been losing money for years prior to the CP selloff.

I remember hearing a story from a guy who was working casual on the dock at CP Transport in Kingston in the 80's, hoping to get on full-time. He hustled the trailers full until a man with whiskers took him aside and told him to knock it off. When he protested, the senior man said "You do it how the contract tells you if you want to go home after work. Otherwise we'd be happy to invite you to a party across the street."

After that, he moved his bill count and no more. I've been told that attitude never changed. That the company should hire more workers to move more bills. Most of the employees, who had bought into the company as part of the buy out, never imagined that they could be doing it wrong. And were subsequently surprised when the company filed for bankruptcy after years of losing millions of dollars instead of turning around based on a 5% pay cut and laying off a third of the employees.

As for Motorways...deregulation in Canada happened in 1989 and the company dove from 30 million in profit to 5 million by 1992. Their bread and butter Motospan express service (Montreal and Toronto to all points west non-stop) was rendered almost entirely pointless when non-Motospan service migrated to the railroad. Their market share in western Canada wasn't as large as the likes of Reimer Express Lines and Canadian Freightways and their premium price made them uncompetitive. They were quietly closed up in 1993 and what little was left of the company (High-Tech Express, a white glove and high security transporter) ended up a part of Tri-Line, eventually sold to Laidlaw and shut down entirely in 2000.

The times are always changing.
