Marthas Vineyard Semi's GPS Led to a tight turn he didnt make

gps is really a prob for our industry in a lot of ways.
sure it helps with up to date road patterns etc, but if it breaks or a guy forgets it, alot of times they have zero clue how to get most places.
and alot of guys will do what this guy did, and throw out common sense and try to make a turn you just cant make, or pay no mind to a low bridge

I've lived and died with my GPS. Whenever I hear stories of drivers regarding GPS my mind is flooded with so many memories.

I use my GPS every day but it is a tool and tool only I NEVER rely on it. I call for directions, use Google maps on my ipad etc but never blindly follow the GPS...

I remember getting jammed up like that in a business parking lot.
Was not long after getting my CDL,which was called a class (A) license back in those days.
However it took me 3 drop & hooks to get myself out of the mess,& continue on.

Not justifying them getting stuck but if you've ever been to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket with a big truck you might understand.

Not justifying either,I was just relating to the spot this trucker was in.

I was posting a similar experience I encountered shortly after getting my license to drive a Semi.

I pulled into a parking lot facing an inside dock I had to back into to make a delivery, and got myself in such a tight spot.
I had to drop my 48 foot Van,pull out and re-position my tractor,re-hook,do a few pull ups,& back ups.
Then continue the process over two more times to get lined up to the dock, without swapping paint with any cars.

Don't blame the GPS for an idiot with his head up his butt.

I laugh when the GPS is blamed for a bridge strike. Law makers were recommending a truck specific GPS for truckers to avoid such incidents. My Rand McNally has unsuccessfully tried to send my under 12' bridges, down truck restricted routes, across explosive restricted bridges, told me I couldn't cross several bridges when I could with an escort, freaked out about hazmat violations when my customer was in the no hazmat zone and many more.

The key was that I had my eyes open and didn't obey my GPS.

I've been there, not in a truck, everything is tiny, it's just a small island with streets that probably date back to colonial days. A charming place for eletists to hang out at but no place for big trucks.
